4L60E Linkage

Looking for some insight here on the LS swap where I also swapped trans from 700R4 to 4L60E (which I thought were same housing). Note the gap in shifting linkage. Also bracket is right up against trans pan. One more thing, as for missing neutral safety switch (NSS), my (sorta) Painless wiring harness does not come with the wiring for the NSS, but was told this (https://www.painlessperformance.com/wc/60122) can work in lieu of that, so I have that as well. Anyone have success with that alternative?

Re: 4L60E Linkage

I am having similar issues to yours, but I can still somewhat shift my car. If your linkage bracket is mounted my bolts on the trans pan, try moving it forward one set of bolts. If I remember after I get out of work, I can take some pictures for you. I cannot remember if I am using the Silverado linkage bracket or the original firebird linkage bracket, hopefully someone can give me some insight after I post pictures.

Re: 4L60E Linkage

Thank you...I look forward to seeing your pictures...as you can see from mine above, there is a good 3" gap I need to close. the linkage bracket is mounted directly to the trans (shifting linkage) shaft and there is only one option there...

Re: 4L60E Linkage

Thank you. I have that shift cable holder too. They are about the same size, but still doesn't explain the 3" gap. See here:

Re: 4L60E Linkage

Very weird, are you sure you have the correct shift cable? FWIW, that cable should be adjustable, but I don think you'll get three inches!

Re: 4L60E Linkage

Yup! OEM cable...just swapped the 700R4 for a 4L60E...(and swapped the engine with an LS1). I'll get back under there soon. There is a great post on that cable adjustment (which is what I believe you are referring to): http://shbox.com/trans/A4_trans_linkage.html. If anyone else has any ideas, please shoot them my way!

Re: 4L60E Linkage

Let me add that the shift cable is the original from a '91 RS V6. The car now has an LS! V8 w/4L60E. Would the V6 to V8 make a difference in that 3"?

Re: 4L60E Linkage

I actually think the shop that re-built the 4L60E may have put the shift cable bracket in the wrong spot! There is another mounting hole ~3" forward (towards the bell housing), so I will try to move it to see if that makes up the difference. I may need a new cable anyhow however bc this trans uses the "ball-socket" connector where the 700R4 was a nut and bolt :/

Re: 4L60E Linkage

That could easily be the issue! What I did about the "ball-socket" deal was drilled and tapped the 4l60 shift lever to the correct thread.

Re: 4L60E Linkage

You drilled out this ball? That is some serious steal!

Re: 4L60E Linkage

Yes sir. Ground it flat and then drilled and tapped.

Re: 4L60E Linkage

Thought I'd give you all an update...problems solved! Two issues:

(1) The shift linkage trans. shaft bracket...there are a few types offered on the 4L60E/700R4 transmissions. Many factors including (a) column shifter vs. center console shifter, (b) cable type (i.e.: bolt vs. ball/socket), and (c) header locations to name a few will determine which one you need to go with. In my case, I needed to mod it thanks to "wlink14"'s recommendation above.

(2) The shift cable mounting bracket...once again, there are a few types offered on the 4L60E/700R4 transmissions which are determined by many factors. Some are also mounted above the pan and some below...some in the middle of the pan, some at the rear of the pan. In my case, I needed to use the bracket on the right which I picked up at a junkyard for $1.33! Haha! The one on the left, which came with my 4L60E, mounts above the pan and to the rear thus causing my 3" gap issues. The one on the right mounts below and in the middle of the pan.

Thanks all!
