The brace on the drive line, necessary ? Whats it supposed to do?

The brace on the drive line seems like its not usefull, is it? I havent had one on my camaro for 3 years (doesent fit the TH350 or TH400) and has been off the firebird since the TH350 went in it. Im debating to put it in when I replace the 350 with the 700r which means I have to change the tail shaft. Oh well I just hope the Transgo shift kit comes in tomorrow. (You pay for overnight but ya never know)
Thanks.

you mean the torque arm? goes from the rear end center to the trans? hell yes it's required, it locates the rear end and keeps it planted, to a degree.

A little more detail would be nice. I cant see how a little rubber pad on the tranny is going to do much, if the torque arm brace was actually held with something besides the cheezy pad lets say bolted to the crossmember then I could see it doing some good.

Torque arm? Took mine off and trashed it, wont fit on the 350. But using the SSM crossmember and lift bars welded to rear.

I would never trash my torque arm, no matter how much of a PITA it can be. The little rubber bushing you're talking about is there to let the arm move a little as the suspension moves up and down. You don't want it to be solid mounted. I would do whatever it takes to keep the torque arm. I'm switching to a 350 myself, and I got the B&M kit. It's good stuff, 1/4 inch steel. If you don't like B&M, Hurst makes one too. It's $90 in Jegs.

Yea, thats what I'm talking about

As far as keeping it, I guess I can change the tailshaft on the 700r4 but as far as my camaro goes, what if I were to get another and bend it (really bend it) and mount it on the crossmember? Im thinking i could even mount the rubber spacer there If I get drill & tourch happy. What do you guys think? I know theres a slim possibility of finding sothing that will mount correctly to the TH400 and the $95 piece that Berl mentioned probably isnt going anybetter than mounting it to the crossmember and besides it's well over $100 with shipping.

Putting a 400 engine and 350 tranny from a 78 Firebird into my 87 Camaro. Have to make a lot of mods for this setup. What drawbacks lie ahead with a solid mount?

If you don't want to do any major surgery to your chassis, check out Spohn's services. He makes a torque arm that will fit any tranmission and is available with a steel bearing mount on the crossmember. you can also adjust it to tune your pinion angle.
Check the banner at the top of the page. (around $350)

Thats probably what I'll do. I'm going to try and make a brace 1st or order the one from B&M $350 is a bit pricy.
