Stuck Shifter Button

Hey yall, I have a 86 Camaro 2.8L MPFI with a 700r4 (circular ball shift ****) and I'm having an issue where the shifter lock button wont lock besides in park. Just wondering if anyone else has had the same issue and if a fix has been found. Thanks

Re: Stuck Shifter Button

When you say "lock" do you mean that when you have it in other gears you can still push/pull the lever? (i.e. it's in reverse but you can pull the lever to neutral?). If so that is a feature so that you can always shift the car into neutral. If you're saying it won't lock in neutral then something is gummed up in the shifter and you just need to pop the panel off and see what's going on.

Re: Stuck Shifter Button

I have no idea if I correctly understood the description of the issue.

If you can put the Gear-Selector into the "Park Position"...
And will not LOCK into place...
That is an issue.

The Detent/ Spring (Button on the Gear-Selector Handle) and/ or the Gate of the Gear-Selector Assembly may be worn-out/ damaged.

For simplicity, I am showing you a 4th-Gen Part (the Components I want you to see are more visible compared to the 3rd-Gen Part).
Gear-Selector Assembly below:

In the Image below:
Look at what almost looks like White-Teeth...
And a Roller that would inter-lock in the spaces between the Teeth.

The White-Teeth are essentially the Gate.
The Spring Detent has the Roller on it.

Re: Stuck Shifter Button

I guess I'll have to remove the center console and see. It will stay locked in park but not in any other gear. I've already accidentally shifted to 2nd while I was in drive going 50 which wasn't fun lol.

Re: Stuck Shifter Button

Then the Detent on the Valve-Body of the Transmission (inside: must drop Oil-Pan) may have broken off.
