Shifter dont lock into place?
Whats the problem? It all started a few days ago and the shifter hasnt locked in place ever since. I dont like this and I dont feel safe driving like this cause I could accidently hit the shifter. I just hate the idea that the shifter wont LOCK into place anymore like it use to. Any ideas will be helpful. Thanks.

is this a stock shifter? they're not supposed to lock into place, that's why some liek myself opt to buy an aftermarket one like the B&M Megashifter

I dont have to use that button now to change gears except when I engage from Park. It does lock in PARK. Anything else, I can just move my stock shifter to any gear without pushing the button.

Stock shifter:
P to R = Button
R to N = No Button
N to OD = No Button
OD to D = Button
D to 2 = Button
2 to 1 = No Button (on mine, but there should be a Button anytime you go down)
1 to 2 = No Button
2 to D = No Button
D to OD = No Button
OD to N = No Button
N to R = Button
R to P = Button
That is how a stock thirdgen shifter works. I've never run with a manual and hell I bolted the stock '87 camaro shifter to the floor of my S10 to go with the same 700R4.

mine locks into every gear. Never heard of a auto that didnt.
But i had that problem and my cable was tore below where it connects onto the tranny in the tranny pan bolts. My advice would be to lift it in the air and have a look at the condiction of the cable, chevy cables are KNOWN for that. My brother had to replace his in both of his camaros.
If its not there, take out your center console and look at where the cable connects to the shift and the braket. I bet you one of the spots lost its connection/the cable tore.
let us know

After using shifters in 5 thirdgens, what I posted is how it works. If yours locks into every postion, you have something different. I've used an '83 SC, '84 Z28, '85 IROC, '87 IROC, and a '90 Bird... and they all worked just like I stated.

Yea my shifter works exactly as Twilightoptics posted except you have to push the button on mine to go from 2nd to 1st. Upshifting should be no button downshifting should be button.
