I’m buying a parts Iroc to swap the engine into mine, it has a 305 but no trans to go with it. I’m not knowledgeable on transmissions so I’m not too sure what to go with. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

 

Manual or Automatic?

 

I’m looking for manual I saw stock replacements on Rock Auto for a 4 speed but I’m currently used to a 5. All I really know is that the 5 spd I have for my V6 won’t work on the 305.

You can go with a TKO/TKX unit, they're gonna be pricey.

You can also source a T-5, that will be cheaper and will work well for the stock application (and modified as long as you know what you're doing while driving).

If the project car started life as an automatic there are several parts that you will need to source before you can do the swap. do a search on here and you'll find several in depth threads on the matter. Places like Hawk's sell entire swaps with all used parts if that's your thing, or you can get lucky at a junk yard.

 

I appreciate the help. This car has been manual it’s whole life in mint condition, bought it with 93k miles the V6 is lacking some power and I don’t have the time or energy to rebuild it. Plus the 305 is cooler anyways… I’m not getting to it immediately cause the car is pretty much a daily for me but I’ll look into the transmissions. Hopefully I can find one in price range. 🤙
