Car doesn’t want to go into park

So all of the sudden yesterday my 91 Firebird doesn’t want to go into park has kind of a hot electrical smell and there is some type of piece of plastic sticking out the side of the console. Does anyone have a clue what this is? I recently purchased the Haynes manual for my car. Unfortunately, the one thing it does not show is how to open up the console and get inside to the shifter mechanism…Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Appears to be related to your question about removing the console on your Firebird

I picture the plastic thing too would be helpful if you get a chance.

Shift back and forth between reverse and drive. While doing this watch your steering column, you should see a piece of the column rotate. Try "helping" that rotating piece on the column while shifting into park. They can get in a bind sometimes.

Sounds like part of the bracket that holds the cable (that goes to the column) may have broken. If you remove the shifter plate you can see everything in there and figure out what's up.
