Both transmissions were available, as far as I can recall, at the same time. Granted, it's been over 40 yrs now, and since the 82 305 cars only came w LG4 or CrossFire, I wasn't particularly interested. Looked SO DAMN GOOD, especially the pace car, butt TOTALLY underwhelming to drive. Not sure how it was possible to specify one or the other.
I later traded in the 4-speed (T-10) 79 Z28 I had at the time on a 83 L69 Z28.
I should clarify, the light-duty Saginaw with 3.50:1 first gear ratio was available with the 4-cyl and 6-cyl all year.
However, I believe toward the end of the 1982 model year the moderate-duty Saginaw with 2.85:1 first gear ratio replaced the Super T10 behind the 5.0L.
I'm hoping to find a bulletin or breakpoint that notes it.
Again, from memory, there were FAR more Saggys than T-10s. I'd say, by at least 5 or 6 to 1.
Again, from memory, I don't recall any "replacement". Seems as though one of the 1st 82s I drove in the fall of 81 had a Saggy. I could be wrong though, it WAS close to 45 yrs ago after all, near half a century. Can't honestly say I've ever driven one with the T-10. Stick cars were FAR less numerous than auto anyway. Between ... that ... and the underwhelming engines (CrossFire was available with 200C only) I didn't buy any 82.
I have gone down a path of researching "which got this part, and which got the other?" in the past and it was inconclusive.
Have you collected any window sticker or build sheet info from any 82 V8 cars? Do the V6 and 4cyl. cars have build sheet info that would show something for a Saginaw that is different than any T10 car?
I have not the faintest dimmest foggiest remotest hint of a whiff of a glimpse of a clue about 4- or 6-cyl cars myself. Not sure I've ever seen more than a quick glance under the hood of a 6-cyl one; butt in a fit of ghoulish schadenfreude one day, I scoped out a 4-cyl in a junkyard. Kind of like looking at a bad wreck that you don't want to look at but just can't help it. Not my proudest moment I admit.
The bulk of the manual transmissions used in '82 V8 powered Camaro's and Firebirds were T10's produced and
stockpiled in 1981. Afterwards the T10 assembly line was retooled for producing 5-speeds. Demand was much
higher that expected and the stock of T10s ran out in July 1982.
My first 82 TA was an early build, my dad ordered it in late 81. It had a Saginaw in it. It actually had 3 Saginaws in it. They didn't hold up well to my father's shifting. I had a friend who had an 82 z28 w a t10. That car only had one t10, they seem to do a little better. I never really understood the reason why some got one trans over the other. Both cars were loaded w most options.
