considering trying to install new ring and pinion for first time. Ive removed carriers to install.lockers and service inner seals in dana 60's and 14 bolt ff by freezing them. They always came close reusing the same shims. But never started from scratch with new gears.

Your suppose to use a dial indicator .There is a spec limit . Remember excessive stretching of the housing will lead to permanent distortion . If you’re having issues removing the carrier you can put a wrench on a ring bolt. Turn the pinion until the wrench pushed on the housing. Then slowly rotate the pinion the carrier will walk out.

Re: Case spreader for a dana 30?

All the case spreader is for, is to widen the space where the carrier goes, so you can put it down into there, then the case is supposed to close back up and put preload on the carrier bearings. Has nothing to do with the gears themselves, new or old, in any manner way shape form or fashion, nothing to do with setting backlash, and nothing to do with removing or installing bearings to the pinion or the carrier itself.

There's other ways of doing that, that don't involve warping the pumpkin in the very place where it's already the most vulnerable and the most likely to allow gear misalignment and failure.

I'm aware of what it does. I usually put them in freezer when removeing and installing carriers. But when setting up new gears it makes it easier adjusting to get the correct pattern. Instead of fighting it everytime

I havnt, did alot of research couldn't find a definitive answer. But seemd like it wouldn't work with other applications etheir. Not to that point yet. But when I get closer I'll dig into it a bit more.
