Sounds like your shift linkage is out of whack where it hooks up to the tranny itself.Jack it up (use jack stands!!!) and see if it goes into the gear it should be in when the shifter is in that gear.Having a friend shift thru the gears while you are underneath will help alot.If that is not it,it sounds like it could be an internal problem, and in that case I have no clue,I run manuals myself.Hope this helps you out some.

like onebadz said it could be that your linkage is out of whack or it could be like something that happened to me. on my 86' the bolts that hold the shift linkage at the tranny came loose and allowing excessive play. so reverse was park and neutral was od etc.... best of luck.

I'd check the lever on the transmission where the cable attaches. A long time ago, the nut spun off the stub and the lever got cockeyed, so it did exactly what you described when I stopped in the driveway.

Yeah it's easy to get to. Just jack it up in the front and put it on jackstands. The linkage is on the drivers side of the tranny. Remeber to put bricks or something behind your tires too, theres nothing more important than safty.

Under the car, on the driver's side of the transmission pan, you'll see where the cable meets the lever. DEFINITELY block the wheels, 'cause if you fiddle with that lever, knock it into neutral or even reverse on a sloped driveway while you're under it..... Before I lowered mine, I used to be able to get away with just parking over the dip in the driveway or putting the front wheels up into a curb just for a quick peek under the car.

in an automatic trans there is a little peice of metel that pops out and goes in between some teeth to put a car in park. its a real dinky set up and they can break real easy. so if wut these guys are tellin ya isn't the prob then its probably this.
