guestion about pressure plate and clutch

hey buys , well umm this isnt exactly a fbody post, but i thought i ask you guys, becuase i dont have much exp , with manul trannys, and since i have a s/10 they are kinda close to the thridgen on parts

ok my guestions is, for the last couple of days my 4spd tranny has been working in my 86s/10 but the reverse would grind gears evertime i would try , well going down the road today, 1,2,3,4 and reverse are all grinding, and actually wont shift in those gears now, now when i turn off my motor i can shift in any gear fine, so i dont think anything is broken ?, allso my clucth pedal now has really no pressure on it, so what im wondering is just my clucth worn out , or both my clucth and pressure plate, or does it sound like the whole tranny is screwed, ?

Tranny is probably good, as long as you dont keep grinding gears. SOunds like a disengagment problem, if the clutch is hydroulic it may need fluid or replacing. Or it could be a clutch plate getting hot and expanding, mine did that. Either way, the tranny is perfectly fine because if it was the synchros it would only be the gear that it was bad on. since all gears are doing it, its clutch / pressure plate / hydroulic related. Somthing needs fixing / replacing for sure, but not the tranny.

Well the simplist way to tell is check if your Clutch needs Fluid to work. There should be a master cylinder under the hood near the firewall (usually) and if its low put fluid in it.... if you cant find one, follow where the clutch pedal is see if theres a long solid Straight ROD coming out of the firewall that moves when you push the clutch. if so that is part of your manual linkage, follow it to the Z-bar then to the bottom where lies the adjustments...

thanks man for the help, yeah i did some reshearch in my chilton books last night, and i know eactly what you are talking about, now, like i said manual tranny is all new to me , anyhow yeah i have hydraclic clucth in the book they say everything from 84 after was made with hydralic , anyhow i checked the fluid and it was empty, so i filled it up, and pumped the clucth still nothing, but i read in the book some more and found out you have to bleed the line and slave just like brakes, so hopefully that will fix it, if not im going to try and replace my slave cylinder, just waiting for my buddy to get here to help me bleed the line,

yep theres air in it. just like brakes. bleed that line and you should be set. bleed it a few times too, just cause you see fluid doesnt mean there isnt a few air bubbles up top somwhere. bleed the line, cap it off, pump it a few times, bleed it again, cap it off, pump it, Etc do this with about 2-3 re-fills of the master cylinder itself.

hummm well tried to bleed the line, and it worked but problem is now i have no pressrue at all on my clucth, and it wont build pressure at all, which leads me to believe that the master cylinder is bad, and not building up pressure, i guess replacing that is my next step ?

HHmmmmm you mean when you step on the clutch PEDAL it just goes to the floor and the clutch does not work (disengage) at all?
Well the only times this happens is when:
#1 Master Cylinder is bad
#2 Wrong type of Hydroulic fluid (your using brake fluid? what?)
#3 Bad Thingamabob (replace the word "thingamabob" with whatever else the problem could be i.e. clutch fork bending, fluid leaking, throwout bearing broken, etc..)
Its a good idea just to look under the vehicle at the clutch fork when you have somone step on the clutch pedal, if the clutch linkage doesnt move at all, and there are no leaks, then yes its prolly the cylinder...

ok well i replaced the master cylinder today, and bled the lines again, still no luck, so tommorow i need to replace the slave cylinder ? in the chilton book they say the slave controlls the fork and release the clucth, so i guess that would be my next logical step, ?

if your throwout bearing is whistling its cuz its riding on the pressure plate. over time this will break it into little bits of metal (ask me how i know) but on hydroulic setups there is little you can do about it since its auto-adjusting...
and Yes the slave cylinder is actually what i would have replaced first... i forgot to mention this sorry...
