WEIRD 9 BOLT 2.5 Gears??? WHAT?

I know im seeing things, I checked 3 times, it makes no sense. Its a 9 Bolt rear end, in my 83 camaro, (not original of course) duel disc brakes etc...
WEIRD:
Ok both tires off the ground. I spin the DRIVE SIDE tire, and BOTH TIRES SPIN the SAME SPEED.
I spin the PASSENGER TIRE and ONLY IT SPINS the DRIVER side tire stays STILL.
WEIRD #2:
I Mark the driveshaft, and have sumone spin the DRIVER side tire(so both tires spin evenly) and count the number of Driveshaft rotations: 2.5 !!!!!
The driveshaft spins 2.5 times for 1 full tire rotation. Does this make ANY sense? Im assuming the gears in the 9 bolt are stock and lower than 2.7X? ??????? WHAT???

just drop the cover and look at the gear. it is STAMPED ON

these were the gears the factory offered for the 9 bolt:

-2.77
-3.08
-3.27
-3.45

3:08 gear ratio was not a 9-bolt option. Only for the 10-bolt.

OK so i will look under the cover. Now, What about that tire thing? Why does one spin and one not spin..
Say.. Does this mean i have limited slip? Somtimes both wheels spin in burnout, somtimes only rear passenger spins... Odd...

I have 3:27's for sale with a 3 series posi unit. the posi unit is worn out, but the 3:27's gears are fine. I'm garage cleaning, so real cheap.

i can do that for you....but r u going to pay me for the fluid and posi additive?

i dont think so

I used to work for a trans shop called world wide transmissions in chicago and when i broke my posi from 60' footing too hard with my blower, i took it to them to fix obviously.

They used to have A TON of 9 bolt crap EVERYWHERE. But through the internet and car enthusists i've helped them sell just about all of it. I originally had the 2.77 gears and they didn't have any 2 series posi's. So they sold me a rebuilt 3 series and a used set of 3.08 gears.

Maybe i can run over there and see if they have anymore gears with a 3.08 gearing and take a snapshot for you

BUT

if they dont, i'd be glad to drop the cover for you and take a picture....that is a good waste of money

you want to pay me?

again

i didn't think so

---------------------------------

kingtal0n...maybe your posi is dieing. That could attribute as to why one tire is spinning and one isn't

--------------------------------

Also, 3.70 was not a factory option.....It was an aftermarket option

Well, if you really want to see one I have one in my garage. It may not have been a very common option but it exists so lay off. It is a 3.08 non posi drum 9 bolt. It is a really rare optioned rear. If all of the rare options it had didnt suck it might be worth something. I have had the cover off and it is a 3.08. Also I looked up the code on the axle and it said that it was a 3.08 open diff rear.

Hey, 89. I thought that the 3.08s were series 2. Are you sure they didnt put a 3.23 in it? Oh, and I didnt know how to tell if it was posi or not to start with by looking inside, but when I turn one wheel the other goes the other way. I thought that if the posi is worn out that the other wheel will just sit still.

89pro????
You answered my question, you don't have a stock 3:08 gears for a 9-bolt but some REPLACEMENTS that you do not know much about. I SAID STOCK.
Also that rare 3:08 drum brake 9-bolt must be so small of a production run that no one lists it. Save it for e-bay.

Screw you, go to autozone and get a cheap haynes manual and you will see that they even list the axle code in there for the borg warner 3.08 open diff. If you dont know what your are talking about shut the **** up.

Chill out, calm down, and grow up. Can't anyone on this board act like an adult. This is pathetic; you guys are cussing at each other over gear ratios.

I dont usually say stuff like that. I was just trying to help prove a point untill he began using his sarcasm and the little bs flag about what I am saying when I have one sitting in my gargage.

I can take some, but it will probably be a few days because I have school and work to deal with during the week, and the camera I have is pretty crappy. I have not used the camera much but I will try to get good enough pictures to show that it is a 9 bolt w/ drums.

<b>kingtal0n...maybe your posi is dieing. That could attribute as to why one tire is spinning and one isn't </b>
Both Tires DO SPIN just not when off the ground. WHen i floor it and do a burnout sittin Still, They both spin. One time, i power braked it for less than a second, and only the right rear spun. but if im racing, they both spin all the way through first (when my car isnt in peices)
On a jack, off the ground, spinning the driver side tire BOTH WILL SPIN spin the passenger tire ONLY IT SPINS.
Whats gives? cant anyone tell me for SURE??? Its definetelly a Posi, but a weird one. Like i said, one full tire turn Yields 2.5 Driveshaft spins.
