9 bolt axle removal/instalation
9 bolt axle removal/instalation
I am considering putting on a set of the pbr rear brakes on my 9 bolt. In order to change the backing plates I have to remove the axles. I have never done this before. I was wondering if I remove them do I have to know how to realign gears or set backlash or anything like that. I know that you are supposed to have special tools, but I have read that some people were able to just put on a set of junk rotors and pound them out(after removing the 4 retaining bolts of course. Will this work, and most of all can the just be slid back in or do I have to do stuff inside of the housing.

the axles won't just slide out. you need a slide hammer, then they'll come out after a few wacks.
and don't rotate the other wheel once the first axle is out, you'll disalign the sidegear and cone splines, and the axles will never go back in.

Does anyone have pictures of what these look like? I have heard people say that they got the axles out by putting rotors on and using a mallot or something to perswade them. Would this work?

i didnt need a slide hammer, the axles just pulled right out, i didnt need anything but my hands to pull them out. i just took some out a few weeks ago.
im not really understanding the slide hammer thing, after removing the 4 retaining bolts at the ends of the axles, both axles just pulled right out of the 9 bolt i had in my car. i had to take the axles out to get the backing plates off and all i did was pull with my hands and they slid out, and it didnt even take alot of force to pull them out. you might want to try it with your hands before you go blow 100 dollars on nothing.

wait now that i think about it, one of them did take a little persuasion from a pry bar to pop out, one came out easy though, but it was nothing to go spend 100 dollars on when you can do it for free with a pry bar.

I've borrowed them from Autozone before for free...just put a deposit for the cost of the tool and you get your money back when you return it.
I took them out tonight. They came out with a little perswasion. I was wondering if anyone knew where I could get the bearings and seals for the axles. If you have part numbers that would be great. Also, I have heard people say that you have to take it to a machine shop to have the races pressed in. Well mine came part way out with the axles, and I was able to pull them out the rest of the way and put them back in. Does this mean that there is something wrong or just that they need replaced, or are they supposed to be that easy to go in and out. Anyway, I put it back together with the new backing plates just so that nothing would get in the axle tubes, and I could see it with the brackets on.

I already talked to him but he didnt have the part numbers. Well, I found them from gm for 30 per bearing and 15 per seal. That is 90 bucks plus 20 per side to have the bearings pressed. Well I found them at advanced auto parts also. I believe that they said that they had bearings for 15 a piece but their better ones were 25 and they had one of the seals for 9 and the other for 15. What would be better about one type of bearings compared to another. I dont want to get some cheap part and have it fail because I didnt spend and extra 20 bucks. Let me know.

Axle bearings are Timken set 9's (get the tapered, not the straight) and can be purchased at any bearing supply house. The axle seals can be ordered from most any auto parts store. No I don't know the part numbers for any of these as it depends on who you buy them from. No, you can't buy them direct unless you are a distributer and buy ALOT of them. $30/bearing is the going rate for a Timken (I don't use anything else) and $16 & $6 are the going rate for seals (depending on which side).
