You have to use the lever to move to and from park and reverse. The 700r4 is a four speed. It is considered a 3 speed with overdrive I guess. Most will not upshift into fourth at full throttle unless it is a b4c which is the rpo code for the police cars. One thing I have learned recently but have not had a chance to test is that up through 87 all 700s would upshift into fourth and that it was not untill the new valve body design in 88 that they would not upshift at full throttle.

Thanks, now for more questions,..are ya ready(and thanks for the help so far,..lol). What all would you recomend for shifting full manual shifts out of the 700 all the time, or would you,...a good daily driver plan or no?,...Again thanks

Well, I dont know whether or not that tears up the tranny or not for sure. I dont think it will have any real bad effects unless you run the rpms up all the time. One other thing I am not sure of is that I know that the fluid pressure is higher in the 1st and 2nd position and I dont know if this has any adverse effects on tranny life or not. If you are asking what shifter I would recommend I have a B&M megashifter, but I got it for free with some other stuff. My car is not running (It has become my project at the moment). I have not driven it since I put the shifter in but I like the way it looks and feels. You might also look at the hurst dual gate. I think that they make one of those to fit the console of the camaro also. The reason I say camaro and not f-body in general is because the consoles come apart different. I have the megashifter in my t/a but in order to do that you have to modify the top plate on the shifter console. It is not difficult once you get it figured out what you are doing. One thing I have heard is that the B&M cables tend to have problems and the Hurst uses the stock cable. Well I wont find that out because I modified my shifter to accept the stock cable also. But as far as you manual shfiting all of the time question, Im sure transfixleo or Probuilt coudl help you with that one. By the way, what kind of car and what year do you have.

Momar,
I have an 87 IROC and it doesn't shift into 4th at WOT. At about 135mph I have to lift off and waft upto 150, most annoying. I'm getting that sorted in a few months when I get my ProBuilt
I also have an old 85 2.8 and it wont upshift into 4th at WOT.
GM are bast@rds for denying them of that feature.

Transfixleo advises against shifting manually all the time since TV line pressure is highest while in D (if memory serves me right). The only REAL shift kit is the TransGo Reprogramming kit, it should have everything necessary for a rebuild plus performance as well.
I had a ratchet shifter and shift kit in my 72 nova. It was sweet. I could slam it as hard as i wanted and never skip a gear. It made my shifts much more precise, because i didn't have to worry about missing the gear i want. Now i just let my tranny do the shifting in my GTA, because the shift points are good, and it keeps me from reving too high on the stock bottom end.

Actually, TV pressure is highest in manual 1st and manual 2nd, and not manual D. It's all in the 700r4 pressure test charts. Line pressure is nearly doubled in 1 & 2. If I remember right, it's about 1800, but for D and OD, it's in the 900-1000 range.
An overhaul kit is used to rebuild your trans. It's rare for an automatic to shred it's planetary gearset, and if that happens, you'd buy a junkyard trans to rebuild, and throw yours out. For this reason, overhaul kits come with gaskets, clutches, bands, o-rings, etc.
A shift kit modifies the factory shifting characteristics to produce a faster, firmer shift. GM (and other companies) build a certain amount of "slip" into the transmission to produce a smooth shift. Why? A little old lady buying a Cadillac would NOT want a car that shifts hard! So GM (and ford and etc) took the middle road.
Find the Haynes manual, "GM Transmission Overhaul, TH-200-4R/TH-350/TH-400/TH-700R4" for $15. It shows you a picture by picture rebuild of our 700r4's, and includes a great chapter on "how automatic transmissions work". I picked mine up at Pep Boys, but you can find them thru http://www.haynes.com - I think even jcwhitney.com sells the book.
I put the B&M Megashifter, B&M Supercooler, B&M 4-3 kickdown kit, B&M Shift Improver Kit (stage 2), and Summit remote trans filter on my car. I didn't know back then (4 years ago, wow) that the B&M Shift Improver Kit is bad news- the TransGo kit is the one I should've put in. This trans isn't acting too well, when it dies, I'll rebuild it myself this time, and upgrade it for the TransGo kit.
