Blew ANOTHER 700r4, need help making decision....
i blew up another 700R4. The shop is tearing it down right now to fnd out what went wrong. Doesnt sound like it smoked any clutches but there are a lot of metal shavings in the trans pan. There is a possibility if its just a hard part that went bad he may be able to fix the trans. If not or there are way too many problems to fix without a full on rebuild, he says he can have a fresh built turbo 350 installed in car with converter for no more then $900. In the long run probably the best choice. Problem is i drive from here in kalamazoo to chicago about once a month and gas milage is gona suck. Am i fooling myself here trying to make due with a 700r or should I just bite the bullet and put a 350 in knowing it will probably be the easiest (and cheapest) route at this point I really love my overdrive but i cant keep putting trannys in my car. This is the 3rd 700 to blow in 2 years. Wonder how much a t400 would run............
so what would you do in my situation? i am a college student with limited funds and im probalby gona have to borrow cash from my parents. My car is on spray, i want to keep it on spray without blowing up a trans every 4 months. I hopefully will be getting a daily driver before this coming fall. I think the writting is on the wall but I need some help deciding here. thanks

hey, i saw your car over in jefferson commons, looks pretty good. There isn't an easy way around having a strong auto with overdrive. a th400 is a three speed so you'll have the same problem as a th350. the 4L80 is an overdrive based on the th400 used in trucks. i don't know if they even fit in our cars though. my ideal idea is a t56 but i know that costs large bucks. i'd build up a strong 700r4 if you can. anyone else done this?

Get a 700-r4 from www.pro-built.net Thats what I did after going through a couple of other so called performace trannys. No more problems since I have had it, and my car runs on the spray to.

I'm running the street/strip tranny with a 9.5 inch 2800 stall. Both the tranny and the converter are absolutley perfect. I have not had a single problem with them since installing them. Pro-built is a great company to deal with,Dana (the owner) knows his **** about the 700-R4 and spends alot of time with each customer to make sure you are gonna get what you want and the tranny will perform exactly the way you want it. I told him what I wanted and how I wanted it to be and is performs exactly like Dana told me it would. :hail: Pro-built

What a great first post!
Anyway, check out Bowtie Overdrives at http://www.700r4.com/sitemap.html they have a number of different levels of 700r4s at really good prices, and I have heard some great things about them.
Read through their site and it seems they have alot of confidence in their work.
I'll be gettin the level 2 as soon as money permits.

Eh; everything I've read and heard seems to say the 700r4 can be made just as reliable as a TH350. It's just harder and more expensive to do! Even the TH350, when it first came out, was deemed as "unreliable", and people dumped the TH350's for Powerglides.
Hell, screw the TH350, wedge a TH400 up there.
(just joking)
