kaboooom! bye bye 200c

Well, the transmission finally let go today in a big way. I was on my way home, just pulled out of a parking lot, went full throttle untill boom! (about 2 seconds on the gas pedal WOT) Tried to slow to make a turn onto my road but of course when you have transmission fluid on your rear tires, that's not easy to do. Slowed down enough to make it into a parking lot and got a tow home. The pattern on the road makes it look like there's a hole in the torque converter. Did the mighty 305 just have too much for it? LOL if you want, give me your thoughts on what let loose. BTW, it's been shifting kind of bad on the 1-2 shift, sort of lazy.

edit: it also broke the plastic cover in two, you can just see the edge of it in the picture.

Ok, finally got under the car again for a closer look to see what happend... I was unbolting the torque converter bolts when on turning to the second one, fluid started dripping out at a pretty good pace. I looked up and saw some shiny metal and felt a nasty ridge It's about an 8 inch or so rip/crack in the converter Also found some nuts and bolts loose from the rear end swap, should have known there was going to be problems because of the idiot who was helping me with that Anyway, the TH400 is getting rebuilt in a couple days to replace the TH200c :hail:

I've grenaded cases, sprags, races, shafts, and flexplates, but never split a converter !!! Good job !!!
It sounds like the converter balloon'ed beyond limits

hehe thanks! Dropping the tranny later today and cutting open the converter on the CNC mill just for kicks. When that converter let loose, it sounded like a M80 going off

Did it ever rattle or make noises? I think mine is on the way out so I'm curious as to what yours did. Thanks

EvilCartman,

I want to get my engine up to the same parts as yours. What is you quarter mile time with that setup?

I've never taken the car to the track but I'm guessing it would run mid 15's.

There wasn't any warning at all, no funny noises or rattles. I just went full throttle from a rolling start and a couple of seconds later, boom! sprayed the road with tranny fluid making it fun to try and stop

Might want to check the motor out too. IF the converter balloned on ya it coulda taken out a thrust bearing.

The motor seemed to run just fine, still holding steady at 60 psi for oil pressure. The converter slid back on the shaft after unbolting it so there wasn't any pressure on the crank at that time... If the motor does let loose down the road, I'm in the works on getting another one put together right now.

I'd like to have a standard for my next car but this is turning into a drag car lol plus the TH400 should stand up well against the punishment of some BBC power Just priced one out today and damn, it looks like it might be cheaper than the 350 I was planning on building.
