Changing plugs
Changing plugs
i got some new Bosh platinum 2's and i had no problem with the drivers side plugs, the passenger side plugs are another story... i planned it to be a quick 20 min job, but i just cant get enough room to fit the rachet...(even using combinations of 4 inch ext/ 3/8 ext.)
whats the best rout to remove them...? right now i have the drivers side done, but i still have the old plugs in the passenger side. should i not drive it with the 2 different plugs in it?
the old ones are ac delco gapped plugs.
also where can i get rid of my old oil?

2 different plugs? Do you have a 4 cylinder? If so I can't help you, I haven't worked on one before. You can get rid of used oil at a bunch of different recycling places and some auto parts stores will take it.
what i mean is... on my 3.1 camaro the passenger side spark plugs are very hard to remove... whats some ideas on removing them? i have already changed the 3 drivers side spark plugs to Bosh platinum "2's", but i still have the old acdelco's in the 3 passenger side sparkplugs. is it okay to drive it 20 miles tomarrow? its just to school, and back, i can work on the remaing 3 tomarrow... any tips?

Your talking about the number 1 plug at the very front of the engine by the alternator huh that plug can be a bitch to get to. go to the part store and they make a sparkplug remover with a T handle and it swivles that will make it very easy to get in there. When you put the new plug back in put a litle electrical or scotch tape around the edge just enough to hold it on so when you pull it off the tape wont stay on that will make it easy to get in. And to get the wire on good if you have long fingers that will work or take the back of a rachet or screwdriver and push around the boot of the wire and it will pop on. First time i did it it took me over a hour to do now i can have all the plugs in in 15 mins. It will be ok to drive i did a tune up on my moms car got the front plugs in but couldt get the 3 at the firewall damn FWD cars she frove it like that for a week or so she had no problems.

Or you could do this, Look at your egr. Follow the pipe underneath the egr down and you will see a heat shield. Take off the two nuts pull the heat shield. Then there will be two weird looking screws holding the egr pipe on, get a 10 mm and some extensions and unscrew these. To get the egr and pipe completely off there are two more 10mm screws connected to the side of the plenum. Take these off. Unclip the wires from the egr and pull the whole section of pipes out. Now your number one plug is RIGHT THERE!! Just get out the ratchet and spark plug socket and get that sucker out of there!! This might seem like a lot to do but trust me it only takes like 5 minutes. Or you could go and get the spark plug swivel tool like FAST RS said. Either way is fine. Have fun!!

What the heck's that EGR heat shield for anyway? I pulled mine a while ago.
I don't get any burnt plugs wires, either...
Also, if you look at a spark plug socket, see how the end the ratchet goes into is shaped like a nut? You can put a wrench on the end of that spark plug socket, instead of using a ratchet.

You know, when I had my heat shield off, it started to melt my egr which caused me to replace that thing! You know that the 90-92 egr's at the dealer cost 370 dollars!! But only 200 at auto zone. That thing about the spark plug socket though is pretty interesting, I will have to try that TomP!

I melted all my wires on the #3 cylynder witth the heat shield on never did take it off finaly the MSD wires i got dont melt. BTW that thing gets hot as hell i have a scar on my hand from when i burnt it on the heatshield.
I bought one of those little handheld spark plug removers. If I can find it and you need a pic, I'll post it, but they have it at autozone. Has a socket on the end w/ a spring wrapped around it and a handle. Last time I did plugs it took me 20 minutes TOTAL.
BTW, I dont' think it'll hurt the car to drive w/ different plugs. My friend finally found out that his mechanic he loved so much is a retard. Not only did he get charged for an LT4 hot cam and Aluminum Heads (funny...magnet sticks to them and they're black) but the plugs we removed...we found 3 different ones, and 2 had spray paint all over them...on the leads. Too bad he can't do anything....the mechanic flipped his car and is in a full body cast at the hospital as of 3 months ago. May be dead now....
