Slip in a used running 3.4.
Read my tech tip thread about the 2.8->3.4 long block swap boogie.
I'm doing this to my Blazer, also.

GM offers a H.O. 3.4 approx 160 hp for just under 2000.00 New. If you can afford it, this would be your best route. If you're looking for more power you will probably have your foot into it alot and I'm not one to trust someone elses used engine. Try Jim Pace Performance.

This is my THIRD engine from the guy.
I AGREE W/ya too.
Do research. Ask around.
You can find this good used running engine if ya scout around for abit.
One guy picked up his 3.4 for $150!
Mine cost more and I get all the options a new 3.4 crate does not have.
My purchase includes
Starter
Manifolds (intake-fuel injectors (special on a 3.4)/exhaust w/heat shields)
proper balancer/flexplate combo
Yeah, I buy gasket kit, etc...
BUT
I spend way less & can use all this extra stuff as spares when my other 2.8 stuff wears down.
It's an option.
This 3.4 I just bought (50K) was $900, including tax & local delivery to my door.

Look, here's the real skinny!
New=$1800+
machine/new parts old small sized 2.8=$1500(? am I really TOO high?)
Swap in good used 3.4=$900 or less.
HONEST I am the HIGHEST PAYING 3.4 person so far.
I'm out in LA, what ya expect.
It's a real wise alternative.
Read my tech thread about the 2.8->3.4 Long Block Swap Boogie.
IT IS A LABOR INTENSIVE OPERATION, no kidding
BUT long term rewards
My Firebird does cruise at 85 MPH, not breaking a sweat and 27+ MPG. For over an hour.
It's a great alternative, IF ya find the 3.4 and you REALLY LIKE YOUR F BODY.
You will NOT win races with this package unless you add LOTS OF YOUR IDEAS AND DOLLARS.
I only offer this as a smog legal swap alternative, that's reasonably priced and makes a more fun/quicker daily ride.
Yes, it does go way faster, too!
I recently got my a$$ handed to me by a 2000 Z28
He gave me thumbs up for trying!
Do your research see what your efforts find.
Get the GM Performance Parts book at GM dealer for the measly $6 to see this engine the 3.4 specs.
Buying a low milage 3.4 is just like getting a new one, broken in!

SO TRUE!!!!
Me?
I get a 30 day warranty.
My 85 Firebird motor, I installed last year, has now over 52K on it.
It purrs.
This is the idea behind a low milage used motor.
Add new timing chain, your "new rebuilt ignition/electronics/fuel system (carb or FI)" and go.
It is a wise smog legal (totally fools the smog police as long as it is disguised properly) option, That's all I suggest it is.

That's why I'll never tell ya to-
open/bore the cylinders and use 3.8 pistons in it
Add NOS or supercharger or turbo or any that $hit.
Why?
These 3.4, as is, with a great detailed installation, work great, almost as factory fast, as a V-8 ride.
But
Still get V-6 insurance rates
V-6 gas milage.
Reuse almost 90% of your old V-6 parts
Almost V-8 performance.

It up to you to figure out how to obtain a $1800 "new" engine, with lots of V-6 spare parts, for less.
I have.
Twice, now.
Again, I agree 100% with your warrannty statement, too.
It's your car, do with your cash what ya think best.
Try for the maximum return on your investment ($ & effort)
