In the 80's, there was some federal law that didn't want speedometers over 85.

The speed limiters are there if the car wasn't ordered with the Z rated tires. The limiter is in the computer chip.

All automatic transmissions have a governor in the tailshaft that controls shift points (not speed limits), but I don't think that's what this post is about.

Heh, I was racing some guy in a vw golf with my old 91 RS. luckily i found out what an rs was after i bought it and sold it immediately.

Anyhow, even with the RS I was smokin' him big time. Then I hit 180 and I thought my motor blew up or something, cuz my car just.... stalled....

Stupid governor...

its because of the non-speed rated tires that come stock on our cars......atleast that was my professor's answer when i asked him

he said since the car was not equipped safely (Z-rated tires) enough they put on the govenor instead

think about, whats cheaper for GM, Z-rated tires on every car OR a few lines of data in the PROM................

A 1990-1992 3.1L is set in the bin file to 115mph off and 112 back on. Im not sure what the 2.8L is limited to in the ecm. Im not 100% sure what a 2.8L is limited to or if it has a limiter....

One of my friends had a 1988 2.8 T5 Firebird and it was limited to 112mph (120mph speedometer - tested on autobahn) ...I have no clue what he did but after a year or so he was doing 130 on GPS
