How can you tell if a governor is bad?

I had my tranny rebuilt recently and the mech put a different governor in and it shifts way to early. I got my original back from him he said if i install it i will have problems. What could be wrong with it? I cleaned it up with brake cleaner and the piston inside seems to be moving back and forth.

Check the condition of the weight pins and pin holes for ware. Check the plastic gear.
the shaft should have no wobble at all
the valving inside can get scored and hang up from grit and clutch dust in the trans. The springs can loose tension from heat.
The shaft journals should be perfect with no scoring. A bad governor can affect both full throttle and part throttle up and downshift points. Generally it has nothing to do with whether the trans slips between gears, just the shift timing.

If the valve inside is free and the shaft shows NO wear, then you can just have the gear replaced and reuse the original.

The gear is pretty worn...shouldnt the gear on the governor in the tranny now work on my original?

thanks!

Always replace a governor gear with a new one. They are very inexpensive and easy to install. One from a tranny shop is usually less than one from a dealership.

Well I put my old governor back in. The car shifts great now...The shift points are where they should be. I dont have to manualy shift it like i did before. And when IM just driving slow it shifts at a low speed. But when I start to get into the throttle some it holds second to about 4200. WOT shift points are 5200 now up from about 4000-4200.

I compared the two governors and the original one looked as good as the one the mech put in it. The only thing was the plastic gear on mine was worn. So I tapped out the roll pin and was installing the one from the rebuild. On the last blow of the hammer i hit the gear like a dummy and smashed it. So i had to use the worn one. I will have to get a new one.

Just wanted to let you guys no how it turned out.

Thanks
Mike
