sure.. but only o so fast.. and anything beyond a reasonable amount of speed will start to cost you an arm and leg.. and not many people make performance parts for a v6 chevy.. if you see the CHC threads he tried to make performance heads for these cars but bailed out since no one was buying.. so now there isn't any hope.. to replace a v6 with a v8 is too costly too.. my advice is to try to fix up your six.. sell it.. and buy an 8.. you'll be much happier in the long run if performance is what your looking for.. not mention you'll find parts a lot easier.. hey i've got a 6 now.. and i'm already thinking about what to bail out for.. as performance wise this engine isn't going very far.. if it goes very much beyond stock at all..
how fast do you want it?
Here's a simple equation I use to equate speed of a car.
Speed=money:money=speed
Basically this means if you want a lot of speed in a car, you're going to have to invest a lot of money. You can make just about** any car go fast, all it takes is money. If you really feel like blowing some stock v8's out of the water you can go hog wild and get a cam, 1.6 roller rockers, cold air intake, headers, high flow cat, high flow catback, rebuilt the engine and bore it out .30 over. Port the intake runners and intake and exhaust ports then throw a nice little supercharger kit on it. Don't forget to upgrade the rest of the drivetrain cause all that horsepower and torque will destroy a stock clutch or torque converter. I've heard stories of hopped up v6's pushing 350hp at the rear wheels w/ blowers.

Or you can go to the boneyard like Karl (Ked85) did and buy a used 3.4 with low miles on it , swaps right in your car . And Karl is very impressed with it . He even has a tech article on the whole swap thats REALLY good . Karl got his low mileage 3.4 for $900 .
Sure , this is no V8 right , but Karl had a mustang owner (5.0) guy ride with him and he was impressed by the 3.4 .

I'm surprised no one has brought up the
:hail: 1989 TTA :hail:
(the king of the V6s)
but I guess everyone wants to know about the 60* V6s...I would say they make nice cruising cars....unless you have LOTS of spare cash, it's not really worth heavily modding them...your effort/time/money could be more efficiently spent on a different engine...

yeh, we've had a few TTA owners on this board, and one guy who swapped a TTA motor into a GTA. Some of the modfied ones were running in the 11's and 12's if memory serves me correct. hmmm, would have to check on that though.
As far as our little 60* motors go, it'll take tons of cash to make them truely fast in say a 1/4 mile of track, or even a 0-60 arena, you can make them quick with relitive ease, but truly fast is definately difficult. From the factory these cars were running in the 17's, which isn't necesarily slow, but it is definately slower than most any v6 car that's on the road today. Gears, cam, exaust, intake, port and polish, should be enough to get you to 0-60 quiker, and through a 1/4 mile of track faster. But then again, it'll most likely be killing your top speed. So, remember most races end at about 40-60 mph anyway, so if that's the type of fast you want, look at peopls sigs, cause most of them have done a good ammount of stuff toget you in that arena.

he had a spare GN engine and he built that up, he'd NEVER rip apart a TTA like that, NEVER

I've seen all 3 of em, they're too nice to cut up and destroy

If you're talking about top speed, I've had mine up to about 110mph. helps if weather conditions are good and if car is having a good day (has MAF hiccups occasionally). drivetrain is a 2.8V6 MPFI with T5 transmission. it's all stock with the exception of a replaced water pump which is pretty much stock spec, and a replaced MAF from an 85-86 camaro, stock spec. it's also a daily driver & just passed 143K miles. and NO air dam .. I always have to mention that since there's the overheating debacle.. my car never overheats.

Making a v6 faster.
I totally agree with 92camaro1. You need lots of dinero to make the 12 valve Chevy 2.8l fast in an Fbody. When I say lots I mean $5000 at the bare minimum. Best thing you can do is do the 3.4l swap or save up for that V8 Fbody. You would really have to love that 2.8 or 3.1 to make it run 13's or lower. You can't get that kind of speed from that engine without a turbocharger or large super charger, all of which would have to be custom fabricated from scratch. The 2.8 is a very unpopular engine in the aftermarket performance world. I only care about improving my 0- 65mph time, engine response, and reliability. I just want my car to do 0-65 in under 7 seconds. I'm saving up for an Alpina tuned BMW. If only our 2.8s were as good as the BMW inline 2.8s then most of us would have little to complain about.
my brothers old car (91 rs with a 3.1) was a fairly quick car. all that we know that had done to it for sure was flowmasters, its top speed was around 130 and i can personaly voutch for that. very scary but it would do it. im sure the previous owner did other stuff to the engine but we bought it with front end damage from a salvage. it had an aftermarket sun roof, i wanna say american racing? aluminum 5 spoke rims, and the guy he sold it to found the little remotes for the viper alarm system and keyless entry under the passenger side seat when he was cleaning it
but it was a very clean little car and i think he was an idiot for every selling it

Sure 2.8's are fast, but they're not quick..(hehe)
I think the car would be quicker if it was front wheel drive.
Hp is loss when the power has to travel such a long distance to the rear wheel.
But front-wheel drive handling isn't as good as rear wheel (except on wet roads).
This is just my 2 cents, so don't get any ideas of converting your Camaro to front-wheel drive.

I have a 1992 3.1 Liter Firebird, and my speed limiter doesn't kick in until 120 MPH. I have had it there a number of times. When the speedometer just crosses the 120 mark, the limiter kicks in. The earlier cars may have had a different speed limiter MPH.

there you go v6 camaroman that is the big mods there those give you the most speed ;-) I can tell i've been away from here for too damn long This winter I plan to start restoring my 65 olds cutlas convertable with its 370 :-P then in the next year start on a crate 350 then yank out my 484,000 mile 2.8 and mail it to canada to chevy and tell them its still running and will hit 130 no problem and they have a problem because it should have died years ago :-) hahaha
