Ouch Bad News
well i've been replacing my cylinder heads and in order to do that i had to remove everything around then engine. I haven't had the car long and when i started workin on it i realized something BAD!!! IT HAS A SMOG PUMP.
My question is how bad does this effect my horsepower? would it be better to leave it alone or rip it out?
Also what are some simple mods to get more hp out the 2.8? Right now everything is off to the block.

I have the same engine.
BUT in a 1985 FEDERAL version S-10 Blazer.
I have NO distributor to carb "computer" as you do on your Camaro.
Here's what ya do.
Rebuild carb & rebush the primary throttle shaft.
It's toast until this is done.
Rebuild distributor, it's simple.
Swap in a 3.4 block & have fun.
You should not waste a bit of effort on this engine as it's so wimpy & worn out.
Honest.
I had one for 211,500 then it died.
It was fun.
My 3.4 swap is a great solution. Everything fits. BUT foundation, rebuild that carb/distb stuff and then swap in the 3.4 and & have fun again.
Sorry, really the truth.
Running 3.4 long blocks go for less than a rebuild of that 2.8, no matter what anyone says. I paid $800 for one & $900 for another.
