b&m shifter

How much work would it be to install a b&m megashifter into my 85 2.8 camaro?

It's aggrivation. Think of labor to remove all interior stuff to access area to work on, drill holes, then reinstall the stuff.
Don't forget crawling under car, too!!
Have to hook up cable, right?

B&M makes a megashifter thats a direct console replacement
u dont need to drill anything

here is some stuff from their website

CONSOLE MEGASHIFTER

Description
Got a Camaro or Firebird with a console shifter? You can have B&M shifter performance with the Console MegaShifter! This shifter features full ratchet action performance, a lighted gear position indicator, chrome stick and trigger assembly, as well as a satin aluminum B&M T-handle. The Console MegaShifter has all the features of the classic universal model that made it the most popular aftermarket automatic shifter around!
Key Features
Same great features as the Megashifter, but designed to fit factory console applications!

Applications
80692 GM '82-'92 Camaro and Firebirds (will not fit '88-'92 Firebird Formula) TH400, 350, 200 & 700-R4
80694 GM '73-'81 Camaro and '70-'81 Firebirds TH400, 350, 200 & 700-R4

i think its 160 bucks at summitracing.com

thats about as cheap as u can get it

personally if i were u i would first put a shift-kit in the tranny (with the vette servo and boost-valve) before getting one of htese

as ur tranny wont shift that fast stock...

You will have to remove your shifter plate and cut it to the pattern provided by B&M. There is also some wiring to do, you will have to connect into your backup lights so they come on when the shifter is in reverse. If I remember right you need to drill two holes to mount a plate for the rear of the shifter to mount to. Then you will need to connect the shifter cable and adjust it. It isn't that dificult of an install as long as you take your time and follow the directions step by step.

I put it in, back in '97- it's not hard at all. If you have a Camaro, you're set, you don't have to cut your console top, the shift plate is a direct bolt-in. Us Firebird guys with the 85-up console tops need to cut. (Thats why the instructions say "not for 88-91 formula", they should say "not for 85-92 Firebird". The shifter fits the car and transmission, but doesn't fit the console's top plate "directly"- it just prevents someone like me calling up B&M and saying "I want my money back, and $100 for a new console top!")

Yep, you do have to drill two holes to mount the shifter to the floorboard, not bad at all. I did my shifter with my center console removed - it made life much easier. You re-use the stock shifter's rear mounting holes, so drilling the fronts is easy.

A lot of people can't seem to adjust the cable right... then they claim the shifter is crap. Adjusting the cable isn't technically hard, but it involves getting into the car and getting under the car and getting back into the car- over and over again, so most people don't bother. Also they have problems wiring up the relay for the park/neutral idle drop, again, I don't know why, they're probably stupid or color blind (or both), but it's an easy wiring job.

It took me 5 or 6 hours, including the removal of the console, and cutting the console lid (not required on a Camaro).

I had to cut mine to install the shifter in my '84 Camaro.

Really? Didn't your top shift plate unscrew with torx screws? Oh wait, there was a template in the box, wasn't there... can't remember. But I'm pretty sure the screws for the shift plate go where your existing hex screws are, right?
