So I'm getting closer to the "replace the 1/4 panel" day.. now I'll be able to really see what I'm doing when I weld. It's a Hornell Speedglass helmet, the cheaper "Utility" version of the 9000 series. See it at http://www.hornell.com . Other than that, nothing much new this weekend; went back to the junkyard to try to get the 28 spline axleshafts- no good, I had no room to swing my hammer.. I was trying to split the case with a chisel. It was working, but I couldn't manage a hard hit, just light taps. So I think I'll say "screw it". I did get a perfect-condition dashboard pad for $5, though. Always good to have spares!

Then why the hell post it? Man if I posted everytime I got a new tool, I would be posting alot. BUT unfortunately, it does the people on the board absolutely no good to know what I am spending my money on.

Tom, have you had the chance to use it yet? Any opinions? I'm looking to get one in the near future. My dad and I have to do some body repair on our van and it would make life much easier.

Actually I did, I tried it out as soon as I got home. Works great! It's weird to be able to see so clearly with the helmet down. The helmet stays at a shade 6 until you turn it on, then it lightens to a shade 3. I couldn't even tell a delay from when I started the arc to when the helmet darkened. I could see everything! There was a slight, split second delay between when the arc stopped and the helmet lightened again, but that's no big deal. But yeah, that was the main reason I bought the helmet; I did some body work on a friend's car (deer ran into the side doors of his car) that I needed a slide hammer for. It was so hard to see those holes to weld them shut... no way was I about to go through the same thing for welding a 1/4 panel to my car!

I start my welding class in 4 weeks, gas, arc, mig, tig, plasma cutters, and we use auto darkening helments!!!!

Welding is a trade that is good to have when you are into cars.

 

HMMM welding plus 1/4 pannel plus pannel on f-body?
