2.8 camaro as an everyday driver?
2.8 camaro as an everyday driver?
Last night my parents and I got in a big argument. It basicly went like they think I drive to fast. And my somehow they found out I was street racing my truck. And all kinds of stuff. So They are only going to let me drive my truck to work and college.(I am going to get my GED I am only 17)
I have an 86 sportcoupe. But the interior is gutted, has cage in it and the motor I am building is on the engine stand and still needs alot to complete.
My freind has a thirdgen(don't know what year)I know it has a carbed 2.8 in it and an auto tranny. He will sell it at a good price.I was wondering how well these motors ran.I used to mess with S-10's and have alot of freinds who still do.And I know U can put alot of miles on em.But they aren't that quick.
What are some probs with these cars?I have worked on my car alot and know how to work on cars.
I plan on putting different springs, Better swaybars,Diskbrake rearend. But will the motor be sl slow it isn't worth it.The college I go to is a pretty good drive and I need some good gas milege and if I am going to have a car I want another thrid gen(I know they are pretty good cars if cared for properly)
So what do U guys think?

1. keep it on the track, parents caint say sqaut about that.
2. Carbed years were 82-84.
3. What are your plans for the 86? & what kind of truck do you have? Basically, why can't you use the truck for the daily drive while you build up the camaro?

My plans for my Camaro are just a budget bracket car.I am building a 355 with vortec heads for it.With th350.I took out all the seats except the drivers.Built a custom 12 point cage which ties the whole car togother.Basicly just a bracket car.
I have a 1990 chevy light duty 3/4 ton 4wd with a 3 inch body lift and 33 inch BFG mud terrains on ultra wheels. The reason I don't run on the track is because I don't street race often.I used to have a GMC sonoma with a moded 4.3 that was pretty quick and I raced every weekend.I got to know all the street races and the local spots.I tottalled that truck.I still hang around all the street races and every once in a while I will make a run.My truck isn't fast enough to take to the track.THe track is 2 hours away.(Gateway international near st louis)
I can use the truck as transportation only to work and school though. So I need something to go out with and stuff like that. But I figure I will just buy this car and make it my daily driver. So I only to pay insurance on one car and stuff like that.

Well if it's the carb'd car, be prepared for a few things...
1, if it's an 82-83 and an automatic, it'll have the TH-200C, which is a 3 speed trans, and it's also garbage. They burn up quick, and aren't very sturdy.
2, if it's an '84 and an automatic, it'll have the GM's "first try" at the TH-700r4, with all of it's initial problems. They burn up quick, usually due to a TV cable that fell out of adjustment and was never fixed - which leads to extremely low fluid pressure, and burns up the trans.
3, the carbs usually need a good rebuild.. check all the old vacuum lines, some might be melted through. I've seen a few 82-84 carb'd v6's that lookd like they had a fire under the hood; vac lines were melted and missing! A good repair manual should list all the vac line connections.
Past that, not too bad...

Can I put a th350 in it if it is an 82-83?I know I would have to get a kit but other than that it would be alright.THe driveshaft is the right lenght already in those cars right.
I am going to his school today whenever school is over to talk to him.
Also I still have the 4.3 out of my sonoma.I was wondering how hard it would be to put it in this car?The motor was freshly rebuilt with a edelbrock intake,5.7 tbi,Edelbrock headers, different cam,(I don't remember the specs)Mildly ported heads.(stock 4.3 heads suck)It was probably making around 230hp.Which isn't bad for a N/A v6.My truck would accasionlly beat auto 5.0 stangs.
Thanks for anymore help

I would look into getting a fuel injected car, most carb rides I have seen get crappy mpg. If your just driving back n forth to school, why care how much hp it has?

Best simplest thing to do.
Sell the F Body
Sell your other truck.
Use that one 4.3 in an already worn out (4.3 platform) S-10 truck & go to school.
Get an education, it pays better than fixing a worn down F body.
Only being real for ya, not harsh.
Don't stop thinking about tomorrow.

Well I don't want it to be a dog.Like I said I will be driving this car everywhere. And when I am with my buddie on weekends that ussually means straight to the usual racing spot.(old industrial road with no one around straight and flat.Safe as street racing can be)
I know you are just trying to help.I am going to get my GED and be an operating engineer.U know they drive bulldozers,Trackhoe's and such.I didn't need a high school diploma for that.I can my GED alot fast and start work sooner.I am working 2 jobs and going to school right now.Trying to get by and I still live with my parents.I know cars can be expensive.(I also race mx)But what can I say I love em.
