i work for a chrysler /dodge dealership and it could be done but the only thing he didn't think of is that intrepids are already rwd and there is no way he could get a prowler tranny so cheap

Actually I have a question about this.
I have only seen pictures of Intrepid engines. But what I was wondering is did dodge mount the FWD intrepid engines North--south instead of east--west? cause in the pictures they sure look that way.

Yes, the engines do sit North-South, BUT they are still mated to a transaxle and are FRONT WHEEL DRIVE.

Caddilac started doing that garbage back around the '70's.

Thanks,
I have been thinking there were mounted north south. Easier to work on, but probably a pain the *** cause they are FWD still.

I never actually saw one up close, so I have been wondering about this for some time.

You'd think they'd be easier to work on......... but every Chrysler i've seen with that setup is crammed in. On some cars, the gap between the front of the engine and the radiator is about ONE INCH. How in the frick are you supposed to change ANYTHING on the front of the motor???

Sounds like they hired a honda engineer.
A friend bought a 87 Pre lude, thought he would fix it up.
Ended up selling it cause changing the alternator at a garage was going to cost more then the car was worth.

Alternator is under the motor. I mean what in the heck was honda thinking.

You have to pull engine accessories off and such, which adds to the repair bill.

Same with the old DOHC 3.4L. I'm lucky enough to not have had to do one yet (knock on wood) but you have to unbolt the engine cradle to get the alternator out. NOT FUN.

BTW, since the alternator was mounted at the bottom behind the motor where heat is aplenty, GM installed a vent duct down to the back of the alt to cool it down.

I hope when I finish my engineering program, that I don't do stupid stuff like this. I probably will, but I hope I see the little things that count.

hahaha little vent down back to cool the alternator, more work probably went into putting it down under the motor then putting up top where it should be.

The SAAB 99 and 900 series are also mounted north to south FWD . they are actually pretty easy to work on. The SAAB 9000 went EAST to WEST and they are a pain to work on . Go figure.

The Intrepid is set up for rwd but it was never used. the body is even stamped for rwd, tranny hump, drive shaft vally. Guy I knew wanted to put a T-56 in his Intrepid why the tranny went but he could not find any way to get it done. This is a guy who has dual 5spd trannys end to end with his own home made adapter and that give his truck a super wide range of gears. If there was any way possiable it would have already been done.

for the cost of parts id go the same big v6 route but stay chevy with the 4.3, single or twin turbo, 4.3 was in monte carlo and chevy truck 2wd and 4x4 so lots of parts, stick, auto, all wheel drive

Heres an interesting note on the Intrepid.
They are planning on making a RWD Intrepid I think in 2004 , so they can compete with the Ford crown vic as police cruisers.
