what's the size of the MAF? just curious. If you have a 3.1L car w/ speed density, it's cheaper, and probably easier too. But my lil' 2.8L would also need a bellow to attach to the Mass Air Flow.

With the '90 Camaro you have the canister filter in the pass side of the car? Anyway, you may want to find a dual snorkel over-the-rad setup from a MAF based 2.8L Camaro. Gives much better flow, has the fitting for the IAT, and is a bolt in. Best part is that it is all GM.

You'll need a filler for the lack of MAF, heck a gutted MAF will work. I used a soup can for a while then made a filler out of some PVC pipe.

Made a world of difference. I think that I may go find the original setup and take a pic of the opening to the filter. Bet you can't drop a quarter through it!

RBob.

edit: well, a little bigger then a quarter. The engine breathes through a 1-5/8" opening. See pics.

I don't think the bastage has a MAF sensor.

I aint feeling well these last few days. I'll take some bettre pics of my setup which does have the MAF . Basically, there is the filter connected to the 1st 90* pvc elbow. I have a rubber coupler attaching the elbow to the MAF. All the bends/elbows were removed from it so it's a straight peice. Due to the lip of the back of the MAF being slighlty smaller than the 3"pvc tube, I took out the dremel and started grinding away on the inside of the tube untill it fit nice & snug. I'm gonna use some rtv to seal it up nice & good. from the tube I go into a 45* street bend, this has the big end on one side to connect to the pipe, & regular size other end. this I put into the flexable rubber intake boot. **** In order to get the best airflow w/minimun friction, I also shoved a piece of the 3" pvc tube into the intake boot. It starts about 2" from ther front, to allow the 45* street bend to butt up against it. & it ends just before the pcv tube thing that connects to the bottom of the intake boot on the pass side.

the black section right by the upper radiator tube is the MAF.

edit: sorry for the insanely huge pic

I don't mind the huge pic, except that you post is a wide as the thread so I had to scroll to and fro. I would like to shorten my intake so the airflow is straighter. I'm sure you have seen my setup before, but I will show it again.

The green arrow is pointing to my Accel Ignition box - it was the only place I could mount it.

Not on the engine as I no longer use this setup. Here is a pic. The cannister sits behind the pass side headlamps on the engine side of the radiator support. Even the snorkel is on the engine side. Inside of the cannister is the air filter element along with the IAT. The upper square-ish piece runs along behind the radiator and then does a 90 deg turn (right side of pic) into the rubber bellows (not shown) that connect it to the throttle body. This is a stock '92 3.1l Camaro setup.

Pic of the 2.8L MAF based Camaro setup. This is what I am currently using. The opening in the center is where the hood latch resides. The bottom of the pic is the front of the car. The filters are located in front of the radiator in the open area of the nose. (two filters one each inside the area surrounded by the shiney 1/4 turn fasteners).

The area of the housing that is raised is where it goes over the radiator. The fitting on the upper right is for the IAT. TPI Camaros use this same filter setup with the exception that they do not have the IAT fitting.

Note that this setup does NOT fit Firebirds.

It does provide a significant inprovement in airflow.

Ok, the majority of the home made cold air intakes I've seen have the cone filter resting right near the top of the engine bay, isn't that just pulling hot air from the engine? Shouldn't they be lower, down inside the fender?

which one do you think would gain more hp, the dual snorkel, or another like the red one shown above???

They will most likely be the same since our motors are small.

checkout the posts by that dude, Project somthin or other, I hear he's doing an intake that has the air filter not in the engine bay, AND addresses the MAF sensor for those involved.

Which do you think would be better, more efective, least amount of problems, I was thinking of mounting it straight down, almost under the car, but someone told me that there could be problems with water getting in there during the wet season.

Sorry for the delay in response. It's hard for me to check the boards over the weekend.

Yep, no MAF for me. 91 'bird. Speed density.

Redraif tried that before and hit a skunk or armidillo, but anyways it took out her filter. She doesn't have that setup anymore. Yeah the filter would get preety dirty down there. I have seen mud come up as far as the alternator pulley.

for those who haven't seen it in the other post, here's wwhat I did. The hole hasn't been cut out yet for the filter in the pic, but it has been done to the car & the intake is pretty much as shown:

oh yeah, insanely stupid huge pic

I use the 2.8 maf based set up RBob shows, with some slight modifications. My engine bay would get real hot, so I cut the water shields off and got some big *** angled pipes and put them one, coming out where my fog lights are. At high speeds, I get somewhat of a ram effect, but I never ever get hot air in my intake. And when my car was running at higher temps, it greatly decreased that bogged down feeling when you floor it but don't go anywhere. Not really a problem now, but in the 95 degree summers here, its a big help.

I'll post some pics when I get to my home computer.

Simple.
Use the same size piping as is currently on car. You'll probably have to squeeze a hose passage down, but no big deal.
