Welcome to the boards!
First recommendation, 2.8 to 3.4 swap, because your 2.8 is dead already. 3.4's come out of the 93-95 Camaro/Firebird. On the tech articles of the sight, look for the 3.4 swap boogie, by KED85.

I agree with finding a 3.4 liter to swap in. Instead of going back stock, you might as well start off with about 20 extra HP, and a bunch more extra torque, for nearly the same money. Find one out of a salvage yard with fairly low miles, follow the swap directions, and then have fun!

I agree, if you want to keep the v6, and make a somewhat easy swap. Find a 3.4l and slap some of your parts, with its block/heads, and away you go. Ked85 and project 85 are the ones to ask. I just started my swap, so I will know a little bit of the tricks before long.
Welcome to the boards, and best of luck.
so you don't get flamed, try using the search buttons on some thoughts that might be commenly asked. If its a tough question, go ahead and post it.

Sometimes a search doesn't help.

Probably wont want to try but, I bought my 88 firebird last Feb, they said they would check oil/tranny fluid etc before I drove it off the lot, anyway I believed them, a week later I go to the store with my 2 munchkins in the car and it is runnin funny so I stop at the store and check the oil/etc no oil-bone dry and no leaks and was no burn-off etc, so I freak and head home figuring it would fry the engine but I wouldnt have to pay 60$ for towing, made it a block and it literally seized up on me with a loud KACHUNK, towed it home, and had a stupid idea facing at least 1000$ min for repair rebuild etc and that I needed the car for work after the weekend I filled up with oil adding an extra quart and figured that since it was still getting cold at nite down here it just might shrink the metal a fraction of a millimeter etc, well after 2 nites of sitting with the occasional trying to start it and getting nothing but a starter bump it turned over and ran, I freaked(didnt expect it to ever work) it ran rough for about 15 sec then smoothed out and ran fine, I am sure there was some slight internal damage but so far no metal in the oil etc and it is still running except for the occasional 127,000 mile problems, anyway thought it would be a interesting story since no mechanic except my friend who was there believes me about the seized engine.
Actually... It did run but it ran with a rather nasty knock and then stalled... The guy i got it from was driving it and it stalled at a stop light and wouldnt restart... I cannot push it back and forth in 5th gear so im assuming its seized...
