Same thing here with the good ole 2.8 . I usually let off at 3500 or 4000. I also think that its just the computer. Anyone have any suggestions?
Tranny board will answer better
BUT you tranny needs reprogramming via shift kit.
Some are better than others.
Check on tranny board for suggestions & brands depending upon your vehicle usage

Check your TV cable for tightness. If it's tight...well, they're old cars with aging trannies, can't expect too much. Mine basically redlines the car before it shifts..and if I attempt to force-shift it at any rpm before, basically, 5500, it rejects and backs off into the previous gear. Needless to say, this makes racing a "Hit the gas and cross your fingers" experience...
Mine has problems with downshifting, but no upshifting problems.
You might want to try the Transgo shift kit. Its a lot more expensive, like $100 more than the $20 B&M, but it actually relieves some wear instead of causing more (like the B&M).
But I'd agree, go to the trans board and talk to TransfixLeo.

The last thing on ionicswing's mind should be a shift kit. He should start saving up for a transmission rebuild. Ever change your fluid, or even look at the fluid? Is it burnt?
We have the same 700r4 transmission as the 83-92 V8 guys, so all the stuff on the trans board applies to us, too. And yeah, transfixleo actually has a v6, and he rebuilt the 700r4 in it a year or so ago!

Hey cam...mine's got both!
It shifts very hard, and very very late...and when it downshifts, ESPECIALLY into first when I really mash the brakes, it's hard and loud....it's a funny noise...a sloshy, dull grind kind of noise with a kick. Only reason this thing is still alive is that transmission cooler!! And my fluid's a nice and pretty shade of dark red... Fluid hasn't been changed since when I got the car and discovered it was down about 2-3 quarts...know the full mark? And the bottom of the stick, it has that twist? My mark was halfway down the twist. That was over a year ago, fluid's still got red to it! I just put in the cheapest high mileage fluid I could find.
