Tranny Shift Points
Tranny Shift Points
Just want to know if my tranny / TV cable are adjusted right. This is for a '86, 2.8, Stock. Shift points are 1-2 10mph, 2-3 25-30mph, 3-4 45mph. All seems smooth. Is this want your getting?

Hard to tell from part-throttle shift points..depends on how much throttle you give...it's too variable. Now, give us your WOT shift points and we'll get a MUCH better idea. My WOT shift points are 1-2 about 30 mph, and 2-3 at about 70-75...
(Those are NOT good shift points..especially 2-3, that's BAD.. Lol, my tranny is screwed. TV cable is perfect though!)

30 mph isn't all that bad...i've got a tranny that's near freshly rebuilt, and it'll shift from 1st to second at roughly 35-40 and then from second into third around 70-75. that's the normal with these gears.

What kind of tires are you running? I've got 235 60R15's and in 1st gear, I top out at about 30. Basically, all my WOT shift points are when the engine redlines.

As far as I know I'm running the stock tire size, maybe a TAD smaller.....what the hell? Lol...seems like mine is geared way lower than everyone else..
You guys are hitting 3rd gear at 70mph
. When do hit Overdrive 120
. I'm talking about normal driving around town, not lighting them up at every light. I have stock (dead) gears & tires (215-65-15) also.

You shift points sound good.
I know my car probably didn't kick into OD till about 50mph.
But the other points sound relitivly close to mine during normal driving.

Thanks Joe_L, these other guys think they have rocket...It's just a 6cyl right??? I mean my other car is a 350 Vette 4sp 3:70, now this car will shift up there in the 70mph range

Ha ha..hey, I wasn't saying that's how I drive all the time, those are just my WOT shift points. Because when I'm at part throttle, my shift points vary widely depending on how much throttle I'm giving. Btw....65 is the stock tire height? Hmm....I hope my speedo's been recalibrated..I'm running 235 60-15's all the way around. And Joe..my car will kick into Overdrive AND lock the torque converter at 40 mph. Talk about crappy....feels like shifting a stick into 4th doing 30.

as far as the stock tire sizes and heights go. As I understand it, the height of 65 or 60 is representing a percentage of the tires width. so......215/65/r16's are 139.75mm. 235/60/r15's are 141mm. Not nearly enough to throw off you're speedometer.
And no, i don't think my cars a rocketship, infact i've driven cars you could call rocketships, and this doesn't qualify as anything close to it. But if you're talking about transmission shift points as far as your shift cables adjustment being accurate, the easiest way to do it is to explain how the transmission shifts at wide open throttle.
rocketships would include eh....
66' Fairlanes built to run high 11's, w/ 4.11's in the back.
third gen camaros with LS1's and 6 speeds
supercharged 97' Camaro's with LT1's and 6 speeds
and any plane i've flown so far.
172's,
Baron's
heck, even a 150.

LS1 in a third gen? Man..I'm drooling. And I've flown a few planes..nothing special though. My favorite was the Piper Cherokee 140...nice and simple single engine bottom wing...the bottom wings ride way smoother. I miss that plane...haven't flown since I was 14 or 15..

LS1 in a third gen, yep...have pix here but i've gotta get the stupid things developed which means burning up the rest of the film. And yeh, i've done work on my license here at college, have the private, and am in work on the commercial at the moment.

Damn all you rich adults.
I'm 18..I'm on my way there..this is only my first car! Seriously though in about a year, maybe a year and a half, I'm going to try to take out a $3000-$5000 student loan and get me a 350 Camaro, or drop a 350 and trans in this one. I'm just tired of the motor... That'll be plenty quick for me for a while to come.. I'll be happy running 13's-14's!

Forgot to mention the R22 Muncie Rockcrusher shifts from first to second at 68 mph and breaks traction
Thats why I pull low 0-60 times, its all 1st gear.
My Camaro however is much more fun to drive, it handles like a gokart compared to this monster.
