Well... it wasn't the tranny (yet)
Well after sitting since the 20th, I finally had enough time to look into the 83's shifting problem. I adjusted the TV cable last night, and managed to break off the second tab that hols it in the metal bracket (@#$%). So I got creative...
Initially I tried to fab up a piece of metal to hold the adjuster in place. However, the metal was too soft and kept breaking SOOOO I took three rubber bands. Two I wrapped around the metal bracket and the third one was woven around the distributor cap towers to assist in it keeping in place.
Took it out for a test drive -- nice smooth shifting, no slipping, running quite well.
I'm not going to drive it regularly in its current state as I don't want the engine heat to kill the rubber bands while on the highway (can you say over rev?). Plus the tranny will be going to get rebuilt in a couple of days and I'll have them but a new cable in.

Mind telling me how you got the thing out? Did you take the bracket bolt off, and then..what...use a screwdriver or something to press down on the plastic piece's tabs? I need to adjust mine but can't get access to it because of that damn bracket.....but I'm afraid to mess with it now!

Well I was working on the carbed v6 but I have adjusted it on my 86. Basically what you said is correct -- Take a screwdriver and push the tabs down. One broke off the last time I had the tranny being sealed at the shop. The second one broke last night.
Don't feel bad -- On the 82-84 Camaros, its located at the back of the passenger side valve cover surrounded by a bracket. PITA to get to!
