Off topic. 1996 Z71 Silverado truck tranny ?'s
My friend has this truck. Wasn't sure how much tranny fluid went in, put 5 quarts now it won't move at all and makes this nasty clicking sound when you start it up. It's a 4 wheel drive too. Not sure what tranny is in it. The transfer case for the 4 wheel drive is at the back of the tranny. Please help ASAP. Thanks much. We need to get this fixed or find out what the prob is soon. We're working on it now. Going to tow it to level ground. If anyone feels like calling me my number is 253-476-0062.

More detail please! Is it just free revving like being in neutral, or is it trying to move? Could it maybe be a transfer case problem? After putting in the 5 quarts, where was the level on the dipstick?
For reference, it is most definately a 4L60E, which is the electronically shifted version of the 700R4 that is in most automatic thirdgen's.

It's free revving and making a horrible noise. Doesn't move at all. The level was well above the full mark. Was working fine before we put the 5 quarts in. I don't think it has anything to do with the transfer case. No noise comming from that. Thanks. He also put tranny fluid in the front differential. Oooops. What's the correct lube for that?

Does it make the "horrible" noise when you try to put it back into park? Sounds like the transfer case got bumped into nuetral by accident and the tranny is engaged, but not moving anything. When you put it back in park the parking pawl is grinding away trying to stop the output shaft. Check the transfer case. Make sure you didn't knock something loose on it.

It makes the horrible noise the whole time.
As soon as you start it up it makes that noise and when going through the gears it still makes that noise and doesn't change at all. Doesn't matter what gear you put it in.
No power going to any of the wheels at all.
What should I look for on the transfer case?
Is there a lever or something that could have got bumped? I thought it was electronically controlled or by vacuum. I guess I'll see when I go back over there. He's probably gonna have it towed to a shop. And probably get ripped off. Thanks for the help.

They either left the filter off, or doubled up the seal (I see alot of that too). There is a metal collared seal that taps into the case, and if you leave it in there, and slide the new seal onto the filter and install it, you can prevent it from sealing properly. Did you remove the old seal or add the new one?

Yes they changed the filter and the collar. We pulled the pan and double checked everything. Couldn't see anything on the transfer case that could have been bumped. Well anyway, he had it towed to the shop. I guess we'll find out what it was when he gets it back.
