Do our cars have governors?

Does my 88 SC have a governor or speed restrictor? Just was wondering. Thanks!

The correct way is to burn yourself a custom computer chip, see the intro to prom burning article by Traxxion at the PROM burner's board. I've seen it done, you don't need an indepth knowledge of computers and programming and other technical electronic stuff. Basically you buy the hardware, hook it all together, and run a program on your computer that does all the electronic stuff for you.

Second way; you interrupt the signal to the ECM (computer) from the VSS (vehicle speed sensor). This way the comptuer doesn't know how fast you're going. 3rd gens had two types of VSS's, one was in the tailshaft of the trans, and the speedometer also runs off of it. Interrupt that signal, and your speedo goes to zero. This is on the later model third gens.

Early-mid model third gens, like my '86, had a cable driven speedometer, and the VSS was stuck in the back of the speedometer. The speedo turned the VSS. So you can interrupt that VSS signal, and your speedo will keep working. 'Course if you're like me and just have an 85 mph speedo, it can't read that high, so having the speedometer work isn't really a big deal.

From what I understand, no. The older ones do not, well maybe lack of power limits them (ouch!). Once you get into the fuel injected models they do. It is a simple fuel cutoff. Hit this MPH and the injectors are stopped. For example the '92 3.1l with BCC AZTY the limits are 115 MPH off and 112 MPH back on. The car just stops accelerating.

I've thought that one way to defeat it would be to divide the speedo by two (gear reduction) and then do an overlay for the speedometer.

An 85 MPH speedometer would then be a 170 MPH speedometer. Hmm, looks interesting from here.

Yeah, I never banged against a limiter with mine, and had that speedo pretty buried, too. (I don't do -that- anymore!!) But I always wonder if I either had a special GM chip, or, if it was my playing around with tire sizes that kept me speeding. GM cars that came with Z-rated tires from the factory didn't get a speed limiter, but that was for the big v8 brothers, like the Z28 and Trans Am and etc. Don't know if they ever extended the same courtesy to v6 owners.

I see, I see. . . I thought I probably would have to do something with a chip. My speedo only goes to 115, so burning a chip to see it go an extra 5 mph wouldn't be worth it to me. But I just needed to know. . . for future reference.

Mine is limited to 115 unfortunately,...and on again at 112 sounds about right. Scared the Crap out of me when I hit it the first time. all of a sudden, the nose dips down you start slowing down... I've heard that the 3.1 can hit close to 150, with the limiter taken off,.. and that sounds about right since I know I can hit the limiter in 4th.

I have a question, for anyone to answer,.. Does the vss control only the speedometer?, or does it affect anything else? Will it throw any codes by being disconnected?

Thanks all..

On my s10 board, some guy installed a toggle switch on a 5sp truck in one wire, wich "disabled" the spedo and the limiter. When you "turned it off" it would throw a CEL but still run just fine. They tryed it on a auto and it totally %$@% the truck off.

IMO the only and true way is to remove it from the prom with a good chip, or specail burned chip.

As for 150 on a 3.1l, hum. I wonder. Mine is kinda pushing it at 85, but that was when it was damn near stock too.

Same basic idea I have given

This is a hairbrained idea but here it goes.
For anybody that wants to defeat the limiter + gain a higher mph speedo, here's what you do.
Lets say you have 2.77 ratio gears in the rearend. Your speedo gears (VSS) are matched to this. Purchase new drive & driven gears(Behind the VSS) for a 3.70 rearend. SLP sells these gear sets for $26.90.
Now when your speedo is reading lets say 100mph, you are probably actually doing in the neighborhood of 120- 130 at a guess.
This is where it gets tricky. Next have a buddy drive next to you in a car with an accurate speedo and simply record every lets say 20mph increments. If he is doing 20mph and yours reads 16mph, make a note. Next, if hes doing 40mph and you are doing 31mph, make another note, etc...
Now with these speeds recorded, repaint the # on your speedo to match.
Again, its hairbrained but it works!

Sorry, you'll never reach close to 150. Mine car is built and areodynaically lowered and was only able to push it through the air to 132 on a fairly steep downhill grade. It takes big HP to push a car that fast.

Either way, I don't think I'd really want to be going even 130 on the kind of roads I drive on. Unless I have a death wish or something.. I think that I could hit 130 with the limiter removed. My car is completely stripped right now, and I'm half done with my fog light delete ram air option, He he he. Why not, a rock busted one out, might as well stuff some scoops in there. I'll get some pics up, hopefully of decent quality, when I'm finished.
As for Dale when you were struggling around 85, Eek, sorry man. Hope the mod's are helping.
