82 berlinetta engine swapout
82 berlinetta engine swapout
Hi There..
I own a 82 Berlinetta and sometime this year I'm looking at replacing the engine. I want replace the V6 with a V6. From what I have found the 2.8L engine was used in many other vehicles.
I called a wrecker and I was told about 500 bucks (Canadian) for a used engine. I then called a few weeks later and asked about a 2.8L outta a S10 and I was told 400.
I guess saying camaro added about 100 bucks to the bill.. so I was wondering.. what other V6 engines can I put in my car? Im not to sure about the tranny but its the original that came with the car and the engine is also the original. What engines can I bolt in that will work with this tranny? If you say the 3.4L or others can you also tell me which car/truck and year its from.
Thanks for your time guys.. Tim. VE5TNC

Well technically the 2.8 for the camaro makes more power. It has aluminum heads, and breaths better. The bottom of the S-10 and Camaro engine are the same, but the top half is a different story. therefore probably making it more expensive to purchase.
Other engines you can swap in are the 3.1 90-92 camaro, and 3.4 long block from the 93-95 camaro's. FWD engines will not work, there bolt hole pattern to the transmission is different.

Price and ease of installation. No change of tranny, wiring, radator, motor mounts, suspension, smog police, price of insurance, OUTRAGIOUS GAS PRICES. If I think, I could find more.
Go for the 3.4l from 93-95 bird/camaro.
Use 3.4l.....
Block, crank, cam, pistons, heads.
Use 2.8l.....
Intake, timing chain cover, valve covers.
An engine that old you will need to get a flywheel from a 88 up engine. Oil pan, um?? Will have to ask one of the more advanced engine swapers on that one.
Will have to tweak carb, or get new.
Advise new timing chain while down that far.

Although its not a classic.. I would like to keep it as close to stock as I can. Cost is another thing.. I dont have a pile of cash to start switching out the whole drivetrain. I figured the simplest way to keep my car on the road is to swap the motor.
Besides.. I dont race.. dont have nothing to prove to anyone.. I have 3 kids to feed.. work is only 4km away and gas is going up
Thanks for your replies sofar guys.. Tim. VE5TNC

what are you smokin' man Okay so we don't have aluminum heads. I know that, but our 2.8's heads have to breath better. Is there something different?

why they wont work is:
starter location (opposite side, unless you want to cut your tranny a little bit)
motor mount locations- FWD blocks were designed for dog bones

Okay, cool.
I just assumed that our heads were better because I read a few S-10 2.8 swaps posts, and they said to use the bottom half, but make sure you change your heads. But I guess that was just poor info.
TealRS, thats cool, I thought it was said that the bolt hole pattern was different as well. But your a mechanic so I will trust you on this. I knew about the starter and mounts, but I assumed the bolt hole pattern was the biggest problem. Bad info. again. But that is what this board is for, learning.

be it 3.1 and 3.4i helped pull enough transmissions and engines from FWD cars to be sure that it is the same
