I Fixed my 30 - 45 MPH Torque Convertor Hiccups For FREE!!

A while back, I post a thread asking for help about Torque Convertor hiccups.
Meaning, my convertor locking/unlocking at speed range of 30-45/50MPH.
What I discovered was TOM P WAS RIGHT!
What I had to do........
PITA PROJECT!!!!
I pulled out the speedo cable (my example is a 1985, & even those years have the Vehicle Speed Sensor setup-the yellow box on back of gauge cluster).
By pulling out the speedo cable, I went thru this dance!
THIS CABLE FOUGHT LIKE A BIG CATFISH NOT WANTING TO BE CAUGHT! I pulled cable into engine bay and released the cable end from the tranny tailshaft housing. Removed the metal shield from the tranny end, also.

Eventually... inner cable came out of the cable housing.
I grabbed only true grease I had (high temp axle grease-was suggested to use White Grease). Smeared gease in palm of hand (no funnies here!). Placed LOTS of grease on the metal inner cable and fed it back thru the housing, at same time, pulling it back out and then inserting again (I really did the best I could to make sure this was an effective mission!!).
THE HARDEST PART OF THIS MISSION - was making the cable slip back thru the TINY tranny end opening.
After that was accompished, I cleaned the excess grease out of the feed cable thru housing area, the LARGE metal cup, that was to be reattached to back of speedo.

Damned if this tip didn't work like the best good luck charm ya ever had.
NEEDLE still jitters EVER SO SLIGHTLY at 0-15/20 MPH.
But from there on up, speedo needle smooth and my Two year Old Son's Butt!

AND my torque convertor NOW WORKS PERFECTLY!!!!!
I've discovered it also locks up at 35 mph, too.

Again, TOM, THANK YOU FOR THE SUGGESTION!
FYI, this mission took about an hour or two, as I wanted to do this ONLY ONCE.

SO WORTH IT!
IF ya have torque convertor hiccups, this IS the solution! AND I bet I gain back a MPG or TWO for city driving. May make my car run cooler, also (which MAY extend the life span of my stupid Ignition Control Modules!).

What's really funny,
My 1974 Corvette, the speedo cable outer housing is open to road elements right at tranny attachment area. There is a hole in the outer housing and I can feel the speedo cable.
That speedo needle never had this dancing speedo needle problem. Oh Why Not!

Let me add a detail to this thread.
ON THE SPEEDO SIDE
is this plastic "plug" that attaches to the speedo head (it's square and plastic and slips over the speedo metal INNER cable end which inserts into the speedo head).
Attempted cable removal resulted in this plastic item, breaking off (THANKFULLY AT THE RIGHT PLACE, the part that slips back onto the metal cable in speedo cable housing)
I had to pull from side that attaches to speedo, to pull out cable.
YET to get this cable out, I basically had to "straighten" cable by my actions stated above.
And as stated above, I inserted cable BACK INTO SPEEDO CABLE HOUSING in through the metal cup that attaches to speedo head.

This mission was so worth the effort, the car drives so unbelievably smooth, I am so stunned.
AND my ride ONLY HAS 126,000 MILES ON IT!

Smooth isn't even in my vocabulary. My car rocks you head back with every shift in every gear......Thanks Darrell Young Transmissions .521 boost valve and 9 cluthes might have something to do with it.

I hear ya.
My 1974 Corvette auto tranny never rebuilt has chirped second gear on upshift.
I recently turned over 140K original miles on that ride.
Would have beeped horn to celebrate, yet the horn part recently cracked due to ignorant **** moving into my space.
My Vette wasn't damaged
I discovered how to rebuild original part for pennies and even discovered I bought a new horn contact sometime in past.
I could have gone the hard shift route.
I also know what it does to drivetrain after awhile.
The upshifts from this guys rebuild are quite good and I do have extra clutches installed, not the "booster" part, tho.
I'd rather have more fun shifting my 1967 RS/SS 350 4-Speed (M-21) Camaro Convertible then beating on my daily drivers. It has the tranny (1969 vintage produced from Muncie) & Hurst Super Shifter from Camaro's pervious owner usage of this ride for drag racing in 70's (it had 454's, 396's & small blocks for various class drag races)
The Wife & 2 year old drive the Firebird constantly, they don't need the beating, just reliability.
I have auto's and stick rides, so I get my jollies either way.
AND LA traffic demands auto tranny so I can concentrate on ignorant ***** on the road.

My car has been having those TCC lockup problems but I have also heard controversy about some sort of sensor on the brake pedal. My car has 75xxx miles on it. Also my speedo needle doesn't fluctuate or bounce at all. I'm somewhat confused as to what to do here.

Your situation is differnt.
Notice I called out "CABLE DRIVEN" speedo.
I believe yours is "different".
Have ya visited the tranny side?
Someone here will probably know the answer for ya.
My 1985, is kinda "last" of alot of old technology (simple solutions to problems) compared to more sensors like yours.
YET, simple place to start is folowing wires.
Try check cleaniness at tranny connection. Could have been damaged due to storm or a puddle?
It's the wire block, on driver side, infront of shifter selector.

Hey Ked does your car still have the fender mounted cruise control unit? That suker gets dry also and causes fluctuations like the little ones you still have, I just lubed mine toay and it took care of my slight wobble. I just cant beleive that was causing your tc problem but stranger things happen.

My 1985 Blazer has cruise control
Firebird is all me driving the ride!
I was "warned" the bouncing speedo reading could affect the TC lock up.
The call was correct!

I just saw a buddy who works at a GM dealership.
I told him my woes of the ICM failures
I was told that's so wild as he's never heard of that solution (replace alternator for curing the high energy spike causing failure).
Certain year rides, can have some solutions & newer technology can be a wire gone bad.
My Blazer I hasn't had a good tranny in it for almost 10 years, so this new rebuild should be a real dream!
