whats the very first thing i can do to boost the performance

perferably both cheap and something that will carry over to the series 1 3800 swap im plannin. and yes i already got the motor set aside at the junk yard! i gots a 87 camaro with a 2.8L mpfi and a auto tranny.and no chips! only thing those are good for is removing your top speed govenor, wich yes is a good thing
i got a haynes manual for this car, and im debating disconnecting the egr and pcv valve would that gain any power? techinicly there recirculating the hott exhaust gases right back into the car right? forgive me if im wrong i do know a bit about how to make power but this is my first fuel injected car ive ever played around with.
also started question on the 3800 swap, is it possible to use a 97+ flywheel cover and just remount the starter to the oppisite side? or anyone know of how to move the starter to the correct side or should i just save up another 250 bux and get a series 2 3800 from a 97+ camaro?
any help will be appreciated

Neither EGR nor PCV modification will make you any power. I wouldn't even mess with the EGR...the topic has been covered on here multiple times and the conclusion is that there's no real point to doing it, and the car will be a royal pain in the *** just to get to run EQUAL to how it did before...it will almost definitely run worse with the EGR disabled due to the computer's programming and other factors. PCV system, that's a 'do it if ya want to' thing. The PCV system basically just circulates fresh air through the crankcase on the driver's side valve cover, and expels it out the passenger side valve cover, where it's sent back into the intake tube. If you want to keep that from happening, disconnect the plastic tube from your stock intake arm, and wiggle the tube out of the valve cover. The grommet might come with it..not sure... Be careful not to get anything in the hole... If the grommet is removeable and in good shape, work it in there nice and tight, and find a push-on breather that's got the right size. Plug the hole in your intake tube as to remove chances of unfiltered air ingestion.

As far as mods that will carry over to the new engine, I couldn't tell you...I mean there are some pretty big differences between a 3800 (which is a 3.8 liter FWD engine...I'm not going to ask how you're doing that swap!) and a 2.8 or 3.1 RWD engine. My advice is...just put up with the sluggishness for now and look forward to the new motor.

I agree; besides, EGR only kicks in at high-speed, low-rpm situations anyway- which happens when you're cruising down the highway at 65, in no particular hurry.

Done a major tuneup yet? (Not just plugs and wires and air filter...)

You could design a homemade ram air system on the cheap, too. There's an article under the thirdgen.org tech page that shows how to do it for a TPI Camaro; your car has the same intake as a TPI v8 camaro.

If your trans is in good shape, you could throw in a shift kit. Try to avoid the B&M Shift Improver Kit for $25. I have it; and wish I didn't put it in- many of the people on the trans board, including a few professional rebuilders- hate the thing. When I rebuild the trans this summer, I'll put in the "real" shift kit- a TransGo kit.

thanx for gettin me the info on the egr before i possibly fragged my motor, and for tellin me about the b&m shift kit, that WAS the one i was eyeballin. honestly tho i mean no respect but there just ant a lot of low dollar mods for the 2.8L OR the 3.1L my cousins got a crane cam in his 92 grand prix and it didnt help much at all 15 hp at the very max and that wasnt worth the time nor the money
short of spending several thousand dollars to get the motor bored, bigger valves in the heads a bigger cam and asorted other thing no way you can make any major power with a 2.8L i am to say the least dissapointed, however i have a 20-30 minute drive to work everyday so im going to REALY appreciate the gas mileage anyways im out for now peeps
see ya laterz
