V-6 exhaust question
in another post i said i'm trying to put a 99 SS LS1 engine in my V-6, but if that doesn't work then i'm gonna put my engine plans on hold for a little while and work on makin the most of my V-6. i was wondering if the V-6 engine makes enough sound to make the exhaust tone good. i dont want to spend $600+ on an exhaust system if a V-6 w/ exhaust doesn't sound too impressive...any feedback would be appreciated, and if you think i should get exhaust, any suggestions on a good brand and style to get the most out of a V-6? thanks

flowmaster sounds good on the six, and so does dynomax apparnetly (but i've never heard them in person). I run a flowmaster 80 series muffler on 2.5 in pipes w/ quad tips. very loud and throaty down low, but up high you can definately tell the engine's s six cylinder, basically 3grand and up...below that and it can be mistaken as whatever you'd like to think it is. lol.

My personal opinion is that the Flowmaster sounds too rough and throaty for a V6..I just don't think the tones balance out evenly. My friend had a 2.8 with a Flowmaster muffler and honestly, even the local coffee-can bumble bee r!ceburners sounded better than that car..
I enjoy the Dynomax system myself...the catback can be ordered from Summit for $154.99. It's a great deal and makes very good power for the car, not to mention it deepens out the exhaust note quite a bit, although it doesn't amplify the sound much. If you want loud and deep on this engine, I'd recommend the Dynomax catback and delete your catalytic converter from the system...that sucker absorbs a lot of sound. That was my one regret when I had my exhaust done..that I just got a new cat...it wasn't nearly as loud as I had hoped, but it did have a very menacing idle on a cold engine...at about 1000 rpms, it's reminiscent of a wimpy 305.

Definitely.. Don't get me wrong, Borla makes GREAT systems....but the price is insane. Definitely not worth it when you think of what that other $500 could buy. Nitrous anybody? Or perhaps just ignition and intake....

That also depends on how long you're planning on keeping your car... The cost of a borla outweighs the cost of 4 dynomax kits if you keep your car long enough to trash 4 exhausts

I have a stock replacement system on my 85. The intermediate pipe came from NAPA and the muffler and cat from Auto Zone. Tailpipes are still the ones that originally came on the car when I bought it in 1998. I recently started the 85 up after sitting for a while (head to get in driveway before the plow came). It sounded pretty mean. Good thing was I found out it had a posi rear! I guess that's what the GA4 RPO in my car meant!

I got a 3.1L and i couldn't find anything on the Borla website. All i've heard was good things about Borla and i rather go with them instead of Flowmaster or Dynomax. Not saying that the other brands are bad but just by word of mouth i've heard Borla is worth the extra buck.

If I can get a Borla 2 1/2" catback with their tunable powerplate design, then I want to add a McCord Power Plate electric cutout on the right side pipe and be able to completely shut down any loud exhaust noise coming from the cutout side when I come home at night- not to disrupt the neighbors too much. I think this is the hot setup. http://www.mccordcg.com/mpp/mpp.htm

wow agood2.8...2 systems in 12 years...my recent catback that rotted out was only bought in june 2000...rotted out by dec 2002...if i could get 6 years out of an exhaust i would love it...however...dynomax is what i just put on my car...sounds good...not loud but like nixon said...sounds like a wimpy 305...its deep and mine actually rumbles the ground a little bit...not saying its a powerhouse...but its cool...it also fits in nice and easy...the only thing i had to do was straighten the muffler out...i made a custom hanger and the thing sits straight and flush with the undercarriage...and nixon...do you think a higher flow cat will give better sound...i am looking at a magnaflow stainless steel...should i go for it...or the walker stock replacement...thanx again guyz and good luck camarors...

I doubt a higher flow cat would make any difference in sound, although I do recommend replacing the stock cat because it's surely near clogged up. But a cat is always gonna be a cat...it's always gonna rob sound...

I have a 3 inch pipe from the high flow cat back to the dynomax muffler. It is a little on the large side, but is good when using the nitrous. I would recommend a 2.5 inch system and I really do like the sound of my dynomax muffler. I put my system on in the spring of 1996, just before I put the nitrous on. I had a local shop order the pipe and the muffler and weld it all together. I have almost no rust on any of it. Of course I live in Tennessee, where it only snows about 3 or 4 times a year, and the nearest beach is 7 or 8 hours away.

this is a test to see if it's possible to post audio clips...if it doesn't work, sorry for taking up space...
<embed src="C:\Documents and Settings\default\My Documents\download\stsa84.wav" autoplay=false controller=true></embed>
sorry icebird.....thirdgen.org doesn't support audio plug-ins, so while i can get the audio box to come up, it won't let the sound play. oh well....

The Ravin on my 3.1 has been mistaken for a mildly worked 305 before. I don't know if that's a sound you really want but at idle the Ravin sounds good. Above 4k it sounds just like stock but louder and to 4k it sounds pretty nice under load at WOT. I paid about $240 for the Z-55 muffler, cat back piping and install at Midas.

Borla really isnt' worth the money. Most people who buy it run around with an open plate anyways (
) . Basically a dynomax catback and a cutout will equal the SAME sound as a Borla. When you want it capped, just cap it. I've heard that Dynomax and Borla mufflers sound almost identical.
Honestly though, I would NOT put a cutout on the V6's. Their livelihood is the lil bit of low end torque they have. A cutout will make you lose that. My dynomax sounded very good on the V6 and doesn't sound ricy like every flow that I've heard on them. I wish people would understand also that Flowmaster does NOT flow good.

installation is pretty straightforward...unbolt from the cat flange...make sure to unbolt the track bar off the rear end...and there is something else and you can pull it out over that...without that you'll never get it in...i used a saws-all to cut the i-pipe into pieces...and then mine bolted right in...just try to make it hang straight and all...and a trick to even out the pipes from the bumper distance is use a 7/8 socket...that'll set everything even...good luck...this week i hollow out the cat and put a straight pipe through it...wonder what that will sound like with dynomax...
