Omg! Is the Engine blown?!?!?
Ok heres the deal;
My engine leaks oil quit a bit.
I have to put a quart of oil in every 2 weeks.
So I put my quart of oil in today.
10w-30
Showed just under full on the dipstick.
-35C outside.
Thats about -25F.
I let my car warm up for 5 min.
Ok so I am driving to the store I stop in the middle of the intersection (to turn left).
All of a sudden my oil light comes on.
(Yes I got stupid idiot lights - when they come on it's too late)
I pull out of the intersection cutting a car off and go into the parking lot.
Car sounds weird.
I turn off the car.
Check the oil.
Oil in it.
Start engine with hood open
Engine makes the most ****ed up sound ever.
Load ticking (really fast) and sorta sounds like hissing? dunno but nothin I heard before.
Turned it off in a couple secs.
Uhh... so I am guessing engine is gone... bah!
Anyways any ideas why the hell that would happen when the oil was FULL?

Guessing by the idiot light and the lifter tick, sounds like your oil pump could have gone.. if it did, kiss the motor goodbye. Oil starvation to the point of the idiot light coming on/lifter tick is a dead ringer for the bearings being spun or scratched to hell now.. sorry to be the bearer of the news =\

Oil Pump. I had a friend with a Nissan Pulser, went up to a ski hill heard the ticking noise, stopped checked the oil, saw there was still oil on the dip stick. So he continued on his way. Parked the car, went skiing for the day. When he came back the to restart the car, the engine was done. The oil pump went killing the engine.
Does not sound good to me. You might have to go hunt for a 3.4L to install in your bird now.

Man, that's some crappy news!! At least you've got an excuse to get yourself a new motor now though...

Is the oil pump going out on these engines a common thing? Or did I just get badluck?
I'm guessing my car will be off the road for a lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggggggggg time.....
or TRY to sell it as is.
The thing has made me walk atleast 5 times now since september.

Ok
UPDATE
I and my dad went to the garage to look at it.
Started it up
Had nasty ticking noise.
Oil light wasn't on anymore
Held it at 3k RPM to get the oil flowing and stuff.
The noise settled down a lot
It seemed fine again.
Took it for a drive.
Looking through the new GM lot, all of a sudden I hear this KnOCKING!
Drive it home.
Put it in the garage.
Bearings shot.
Turned the crank pully with wrench, has play it it and makes the engine knock.
My dad say the bearing shot making the connecting rods knock, which in turn, the Crank could be ****ed up now.
This seems to be a common thing to happen to these engines at around 230,000KM (164,000M)
I know 4 people that this has happened to them.
A camaro, 2 S10's and a JIMMY.
well ****!

Here's the deal.
Milage & blown engines are not one in the same.
An engine can die at low milage, also.
Regardless, ya now faced with a what ya gonna do.
IF YA LOVE THE CAR, swap mills.
I coach 3.4 installations very well. Ya can be almost #35 or more or so,
IF ya couldn't care less about the ride, dump it, oh well, get new ride to enjoy.
How much
People buy used mills like me for about $500 average.
One person bought his 3.4 low for $210 & I buy high at $800-900.
I spend more, I get more on he mill I buy & I buy low milage mills.
Right now people seem to find 3.4 with about 70K+ miles on it.
NEXt what's condition of the ride?
Rusty, banged body, crappy suspension?
Dump it.
What's/when was tranny rebuilt?
Y ya ask?
Usually after ya install a 3.4, the tranny goes south.
WHY?
SO MUCH NEW FOUND TORQUE.
There ya have it.
How simple is swap?
IT'S SO SIMPLE YET EXTREMLY DETAILED SWAP.
IF ya foundation of the current ride is decent, it's a viable cost effective option.
IF the current ride is a piece of money pit, start fresh.
Thrid gens are a dime a dozen.
How much HP & stuff like that ya gain from a 2.8?
IF ya that concerned, I suggest ya find a more powerful ride.
I made my car/truck run & reliable & more powerful on a shoe string budget.
My Wife gets a new minivan shortly. I get fun older rides for pennies on dollar, that appreciate in value or maintain value & insurance stays very low.
That's what matters to me, most.
It's a tough decision, think it thru.
IF ya never done a swap, dump the ride for a better car.
How long?
Took me about 4-6 weeks for the Firebird swap. My Blazer is taking longer, yet will be better in end (Not being rushed is a treat!-working with a sprained shoulder, wasn't!)

My vehicle is in good condition.
-There is only a bit of rust on the lip of the fender well.
Caused by canadian Winters.
-Engine still runs, just knocks slightly at idle but more/louder when you rev it up.
-It has 230,000Km (160,000m)
-Dont know when/if transmition was rebuilt.
-My dad has swaped engine back in the day (Carbed! But not FI stuff, he doesn't liek fuel injection AT ALL)
-The paint is NICE and VERRRY shiney (Red!)
-It is a base model bird with No power windows or locks, though it has the power hatch
-Suspension seems fine
-Interior is excellent except at the back of the cargo area where it is worn
-IMO the car is visually apealing
-The rust on the fender well lip is under the pain (surface rust - it's bubbling)
I am going to sell the car no matter what. It has been nothing but headaches, makin me walk when it's -25F outside. Good thign there was a friend driving behind me.
I am thinking I might sell as is.
I am hoping to get $2000 Canada for it. Maybe more?!?
2k canadian is $1300usd
It's a base model firebird with New paint - 2 years old
It has rally rims
And little rust
The transmition shifts fine
It needs an engine cause it knocks.
here are some pictures
Do u think 2k canadian is reasonable or should I got for 2500? I'd need that money to buy another ride...
