Rusted Oil Pan
My oil pan is rusted through, and i got to get it replaced. Does anyone know if i can do it myself? or do i have to get someone to raise the engine to replace it?

first off, how the hell did it rust through with out anyone noticing that it was getting rusty. I can understand taking it to get an oil change and you don't actually see it, but I spend a lot of time under my car, and for it to rust all the way through...that takes time so I'm suprised that you didn't notice it before. If the rust didn't start on the outside, something's wrong with the motor, that means that there is water in the pan...BAD NEWS. But to answer your original question, it'll be easier for you to take it to a shop to get it done since they will be able to raise the car and then raise the motor enough to get it in and out without messing things up. Good luck man.

I wonder if it'd be possible to just weld a plate over the rusted area without ruining anything. As long as the ground clamp for the MIG was placed very close to the weld location, I don't think any of the engine parts would get damaged. (Ground a MIG clamp too far away, and that welding spark gets transmitted to everything- door hinges, piston rings, etc) Wouldn't be a proper fix but I can't see it costing too much.

I just bought my car, and the guy told me it was leaking a little bit of oil, so i didnt think it was a big deal. When i let it set in my driveway for a few hours, i noticed a good sized puddle of oil. Long story short, i have to replace the oil pan, but it's no big deal because I know a guy with the right equipment that'll do it for free, as long as i buy the oil pan.

ok, then. Answers my question...I know all about other people not taking care of their cars before they sell them...
