HELP!!! Engine knocking

OK I'll try to explain this the best I can. I have been having problems with my cooling system for about 2 months. The car was running really hot but the heat light didn't come on unless I had little coolant in it... I was leaking out of the waterpump gasket the pump was good but the gasket was worn. So I replaced all the hoses thermostat and water pump and all proper gaskets. But right before I changed the water pump. There was a tick coming from the upper part of the engine I just thought it was the bearings in the water pump. Well, It wasn't I changed all of that and now it ticks with every fire of a piston and knocks when I accelerate or rev the engine. And it bangs and makes a grinding sound (as if you would run a chain over a piece of wood) when it shifts from High gear to low. And at higher Rpm's. I was told it was the main bearing. I have never came across this before so I don;t know.... Any suggestions would be welcome.

And also is it worth it to do a rebuild on the 2.8 or just do a 3.4 swap. Or just get another 2.8.

Oh bye the way. Its a 1987 Camaro 2.8 MPFI.

tick is probly a injector. I thought I had a bad lifter, or the top end was getting ready to fall apart, It was BAD. But it was nothing but a noisey injector. replaced, and all was well.

That could explain the tick. but what about the knocking. It sounds as if you were to put you fingers into a plastic fan blade.

So how would I go about checking that. Just yank on the exhaust manifold and see if it moves? Not extremely experienced with this. I am still in the learning process

run your hand as close to the manifold as you can get without touching it, you should feel the air comming out. it shouldn't burn you unless you keep your hand there for a while. the other approch would be to run the motor and listen very carefully. If in doubt, just replace it, it's not that hard.

a water hose with the sprayer misting works wonders! If the water flies stright, area=good, if it flies straight up=bad.

That'll work if the leak is on the top of the manifold, but what about underneth???
