IT MAY BE & asking on tranny side could provide better response.
YET
It could also be the speedo cable (binding & to need to be regreased).
IF tranny fluid hasn't been changed in ages, may be due or that may be wasted effort, too.
After all my tranny fun in life, I now let shop service it once a year for the few bucks.
They built it & they can back up their warranty.

I look at a 700R4 as NOT the TH400 in my 1974 Corvette, that has never been rebuilt & still shifts & can chirp tire from 1 to 2.
I think the TH400 was road tested in the TANKS GM has built. I know my Corvette acts like a tank!

my rebuilt 700r4 does the "unsure" shift into 4th sometimes.

If it warms up after a few mins, you might want to change the fluid. Beware, I have heard stories of people leaving fluid in trannys to long, and then decide to change it, and actually cause more problems, then if just leaving it in.

i would let a garage do that work, but should i goahead and have them install a shift kit while they are underthere?

Could also be tuneup related; if the engine's acting up, the trans doesn't know when to "automatically" shift.

Don't install a shift kit on a transmission that hasn't been rebuilt. It just isn't a good idea in my opinion. You want firmer shifts...try a bottle of Lucas Slip Fix. Stuff is thick as honey, good enough to not void new car warranties... And actually helped to firm the shifts up substantially in my Mustang's transmission, which is on the verge of losing gears due to 147,000 miles of age plus the engine output at the fly went from 225 to probably 325+ right now. That's never good on an old tranny.

My fiance's Volvo used to do that, we got the transmission flushed (includes cleaning out the T/C) and the problem went away. 254,000 miles and it shifts soooooo smooth. When was the last time you got a total flush. When you just drain and refill the trans you only get like half of the dirty fluid. it costs like $60-$75 to get it done.

Just remember that smooth isnt always good! Sometimes it can be a sign of low fluid pressure or slipping clutches. My buddy's 2.8 shifted awesomely smooth. And it missed gears and slipped out sometimes. My other friend ran his tranny with his TV cable disconnected. Shifted insanely smooth. And about 1 month later, while racing, he blew up 2nd and 4th gears.

Thank ya Karl! That means a lot to me! That car is basically my dream right now...I just can't leave it alone. Hell I bought an EGR valve for it today and the thing runs SO much better. It's an ongoing project.... I wouldn't be where I was with it today if it wasn't for the support of my dad, and for a really great credit card.
