I've got a 3.1 i'm sure you guys know what the air intake looks like. ( runs straight off the throttle body to the edge of the hood then 90 degree turn towards the passenger side then goes to the fender and then goes straight down, and that is where the air filter is and thats where the hole is where it sucks in the air.) Well i've already gotten water in my engine and had to replace it because it went throught the air filter and intake. I was wondering if anybody has seen an after market air intake to raise it up a little and out of the water. Or if anbody has made one themselves. Please let me know whats up, I don't want to get another engine just yet.

Pick up a little import car magazine; there's a device they sell (mainly aimed at imports) that's a bypass for a waterlogged filter. If I think of it I'll ask my buddy about it.

It's a piece of tubing with some strips of air filter and some strips of rubber. When the filter gets clogged, the strips of rubber peel back and expose the part's own air filter strips. So the engine still breathes, but the water doesn't rise up into the engine from the "real" air filter.

Were you using a K&N filter? How much water did that suck in (did you hit a big puddle)?

A very cool alternative is to cut a hole in the firewall so you meet the air passageway in the cowl, then you could suck clean air in from the vents in front of the windshield.

If you have a Camaro get the Y shaped air intake from an earlier 2.8l Camaro. It fits up over the radiator to pull in cold air from up front. Also sits much higher then the standard '90-'92 canister air cleaner.

I actually did hit a big puddle. In arizona, our drain system SUCKS. The roads flood easily and I didn't know the streets too good on that side of town. TOM, do you have a pic or diagram for the air intake through the cowl up by the window?

Wow! Old message! I just did a search, and found a guy who made his own. It's for a Mazda Miata, but the same principle applies. And I'll be damned, but it looks pretty good for homemade! http://members.***.net/marklein/cai/cai.htm

Would the mazda setup even work? I don't think too much air gets pushed in from the hood cowl area? Am i wrong here?
