Same here; couldn't tell with the stock shifter. It's just lining up the stick's position with the gear indicator, that's all... nothing broken about it. Buy a B&M Megashifter if you want a real shift indicator...

Yeah don't get the Megashifter UNLESS you can find someone who has experience with these things. I had mine installed in December and it never worked well to begin with. The cable would bind up and it was almost impossible to shift down into 1st gear or i'd ge stuck in neutral. if the neutral safety switches aren't lined up right, the reverse will be on while in drive. The indicator cable broke then like a month ago my car was permenantly stuck in neutral. Took the cable out and it was rusted. My boyfriend put a new cable in and it took him an hour to route it right so it wouldn't bind, we still had to rig up the indicator cable to work right. The good news is that it shifts flawlessly. Absolutely perfect now, it shifts really smooth. I haven't had any problems with it. If that cable isn't routed right, you're screwed. It has to be perfect or that shifter will bind up like a ***** lol.

Edit: The shifter itself was easy to install, there were no problems with that. There's a gate you have to remove when installing the shifter for a 4 speed automatic. The only problem was that darn cable.

LOL, maybe the both of you should read the directions next time!

The shifter works great (for me), only problem I had was when the shift cable wore out last year. I installed it myself (with no problems!) back in '96, so I guess 6 years is good for a cable's lifetime. But if you don't have $150 in your pocket, don't bother, you won't notice any performance benefit with it.

Hey, I read those directions. B&M has to make a better cable!

Some guys on the trans forum got the shorter cable, the 3 foot one, to work. They say it requires almost no routing, unlike the 5 footer that B&M includes with the trans. (I bought another 5 footer.)

When I removed my old cable, I put it in the same loop it had been when it was installed, and tried to work it by hand- I couldn't budge it! I took the new cable and put it in the same loop, and could work it easily by hand. I can only assume the inside of the cable sheath had worn out... or whatever they used to coat it with was gone (teflon?)...

(laughs) That's one of the things I always yell at someone when they say "I just installed my B&M and it's hard to move the lever"- I tell 'em they either need to get aggressive, or start lifting weights... it is, after all, a racing shifter.

I can't imagine a racer "babying" the shifter, ya know?
