Engine Stalls @ idle

Axle/Gears: Stock 3.23
Engine Stalls @ idle

Ok this is a new problem. When it warms up and its at a stand still it will stall out when I am in drive or reverse. when in nuetral and park its ok. even when its in drive and I'm not on the gas and moving its ok. Its only when I'm at dead stop. it will idle For a sec then bog and stall. The plugs, wires, cap and rotor are only about 300 miles old, New oil. I'm leaning towards vacume problem. My lines are patched w/ washer lines, and duct tape. with out duct tape the universe would Fall apart.

definately sounds like a vacuum problem. Sounds like it only dies when you have the brake pedal depressed.

Try this- with the car in park and at idle, press the brake pedal and hold it- see if it stumbles and wants to die then. Most likely will.

Check the vacuum lines and also check the EGR Vlave. The EGR on your year car can develop a slit in the diaphram underneath (hard to detect) and will cause havoc in the brake booster and vacuum system.

I've always had a small leak in my ERG system the part that comes out of the Exaust man. and goes into the Plenum And no problems til now. My brake pedal does travel quite a bit about 1/2 way til it grabs. Do you know anywhere I could get all new hard plastic vacume lines. non of that stuff that gets pinched off.

Screw plastic... put some real vacuum hose in there!

Check your IAC...

More specifically, clean it

The reason I said hard Plastic is because when I used rubber vacume hose it either got pinched off some how or melted. I think I am gonna get some J&B weld to fix that leak in the ERG system. I also have a hole in my exaust pipe on the bend before it goes into the muffler could that have anything to do with it. Well we will know by saturday if the exaust has anything to do with it... I HATE EXAUST work... I'm replacing the whole pipe... Its gonna be so much fun because the whole exaust it welded together and I don't have a welder. and it has some bends it shouldn't be there, due to the fact I have to CC.

sorry to bring this post back if it is old, but i figured it would be better than starting a whole new thread...

i am pretty new to the whole car thing, and i seem to be having the same type of problem. though my dad know just about anything you need, he has been out of town for work for a couple months and i dont know when he is getting back, and this thing is getting on my nerves.

anyways...is there a simple way to check for a vacuum leak?

how about this EGR valve? --hell, i suck so bad i dont even know where it is located...

and what is this IAC? how could i go about cleaning it?

I know that 90-92 EGR valves are located on the passenger side of the engine right behind the alternator. Not sure about earlier models. The IAC is located on the throttle body. Not sure how to clean either of them. 90-92 EGRs are digital and I don't know if they can be cleaned.

Vac leaks are easy.. if you know what you're looking for.. If you can track down a hissing noise anywhere vaccum should be, you've got a vac leak. These places include: Any vaccuum line running from the engine (EGR, Brake booster, HVAC controls (inside the car and the line under the hood)), Intake manifold, Plenum, throttle body (IAC and the gasket to the plenum)... spraying throttle body cleaner on a suspected vac leak will determine if it is a leak or not. If the car sputters and/or dies as a result of TB cleaner being sprayed, there's a vac leak wherever you just sprayed (unless you're spraying directly into the throttle body.. that's just normal)

Here's a sloution to all vacuum problems: DON'T get the precut lines, go out an buy a package of hose from an auto parts store, and route the hose OUT OF THE WAY OF ALL HEAT sources. BTW, another common place for leaks is at the emissions canister in the front corner of the engine compartment, since there are like six or so hoses running in and out of that area. If you aren't sure which are leaking, replace them all! That didn't cost me more than $12 and I bought extra hose becuase ALL of mine was junk and leaking. If it falls apart in your hands, replace it! Better to be extra cautious than sorry in the end!

i tried this and nothing happened...

i guess i will just have to wait until my dad gets home...

this problem is starting to get on my nerves...i might just save up and get an ls-1
