2.8 power this much?

Ok i bought this 85 firebird not too long ago, when i did it had 8.8 accels on it and ngk v plugs or something like that in it, I changed the air filter to one of the open cone types, it has a posi rear also. well last night i was on the highway comming home. I was in a hurry so i was driving fast. I was up to 90 mph,or where it would be if my gauge when that high, I pushed the pedal down to the point when the trans downshifted , not all the way down but just to that point, the car kept gaining speed. I had to let off of it because of traffic but when i did the needle was all the way back around to 20mph!? I hear people say how much the 2.8 sucks and i wonder whats up with mine because it really isnt that bad. If i power brake it it spins both tires very easy and all, anyone elses 2.8 do this too? and if not wth is up with mine?

Are you sure it's a 2.8? Someone could have tossed a 3.4 under that 2.8 intake

im not sure, i know the intake was off, as well as the heads and water pump as you can see new gasket mater all around them all. when i pulled the plugs i was kinda windering about the motor because for an 85 with 106k it burns no oil at all. I think the engine code is right on the front of the engine, does anyone know how i can find out what code is for what engine?

I have an 86 Camaro with the 2.8--5 speed.
It will wrap the speedometer around, also has no problem leaving rubber on the road.

I know my 2.8 will run 121mph... going to have to have Adam and his 5.0 pace me to see what she'll run now.

I did a powerbrake in mine last week; it peeled out so easily that it shocked me. (I haven't tried to do one for years... I guess I'm just getting old? ) Your 2.8 is probably just in good shape, and in good tune, like mine. Just passed 258,000 miles over the weekend... hopefully I'll be able to rebuild the motor before 300,000 rolls around.

Yeah.. and I've wrapped my speedo around to 25-30 before on my 86 without actually noticing till my radar detector started complaining.. They're not slow cars.. they're just not fast either

my old 2.8 and tranny were savage, shed go sideways do burnouts and wrap the speedo around like nothing, and you could keep her floored into 4th as well

to tell if its a 2.8 or 3.4. Somehow the casting braces, and things like that are on the side.

Somewhere at home I have a picture of my 3.4 and 2.8 side by side.

Some real good up close pictures of the 3.4 also.

Sorry, not to many pictures of my old 2.8

I have a 115mph speedo and I wrapped mine around to 15 or 20 before the speedo broke.

My 2.8 has only 47k on it and it has intake and no muffler. It seems pretty balzy compared to other V6s i have driven...

No exhaust would explain that. The V6 needs BP.

Doward here....

Yeah... 2 MAF's? Sorry man.. didn't mean to come off so harsh on you... I had just had to listen to a friend with a Civic talking about how now his '96 will tear up the turbo 2.8, since he's got a cold air intake... I'm thinking cold air induction, and a new intake? No... just popped a K&N at the end of the stock air induction.

Then actually wanted to argue over whether or not my camaro had an intake...

So... sorry man!

Typical magazine couch mechanic that was sold a bill of goods- that filter make the motor run as good as a stock new filter with the awesome modification your car has (Awesome mods was a joke son, in case you missed that) That miraculous hot rod filter that you have will only out flow a stock filter on YOUR motor when they start to get dirty.

Ps- A FILTER IS NOT A MODIFICATION
