Rear gear Oil change. Help.
Hello,
I am gonna change my rear gear oil and I haven't ever changed it, I've had the car for a year... I know nothing about different gear oils. The rear has about 120k miles on it, so I want the best oil. Sould I get snyth oil or what. Let me know, what weights ect...

i use amsoil, because i got a case gave to me. when it's gone it'll be M1 again. not sure of the weight, any will work as long as it hits 90 in the weight range. buy a gasket and don't use rtv, it'll make for a neater job. if there are dimpples where the bolts pulled the cover hammer them out before you put the cover back on

This is one job where I have everything but havnt done it yet. its so cramped under there and unless the car is level, you could over fill the read end allot. not to mention trying to get the bottle tip into the hole. I am not sure how in the heck to do it without a lift. I guess I could do it on the ramps and then drive it off with the fill plug out and it would then level off and I might be able to get it back in.
Let me know how much fun it is to do and any tips you think of while doing it. I got the oil but just havnt found the time or energy.

Most of the rear gear oil comes in squeezable bottles to make it easier to fill the differential. Alternately you could buy a long length of hose and pour it though that. Or you could buy a small hand pump from an auto parts store for about 10 bucks, which works very well for such a task.

just drive the front end up on the ramps, then put the rear on jackstands.... or put the rear on ramps, and the front on jackstand.
or all 4 corners on jackstands.

I actually bought the pump that screws right onto the top of the bottle. It makes life REALLY easy. It only cost like $4 at the local parts store.

I don't really have $100 to buy a good floor jack.

I wonder if I could just put a fill bung in the cover myself. I got taps and a welder. slap a piece of metal on the cover just to make it thicker and tape a hole the same size and even with the o access room hole on the side. I went out and looked today and remeber why i havnt done it. I got like 0 room and my exhaust is right in front of the filler hole.

As long as you put the fill hole at the right height, it would work fine. Did that on my old T-bird many years ago...
Don't the 9-bolts have the fill plug already on the cover?

jackstands: $24.
jack: $25
not the best stuff in the world, but they're still safe.... just be sure to have it on the stands and not on the jack.
and expect the jack to leak after about a year or 2.... sure it doesnt last a lifetime, but a cheap walmart MVP jack is better then no jack at all.

I got two of them $25 jacks, what I need is the good $100+ monster floor jack that has a 3-4 foot lift that gets the car up high enough.

ooh.
jack up one side as far as you can, set it on the stands.
jack up the other side as high as you can.. set it on the stands.
now slip a fat piece off wood under the jack. i have a 4x4 piece that fits between all the wheels and holds it nice and snug...
now continue jacking your car up.
you can also do it the oppisate way and place a smaller piece of wood btween the car and the jack.
just dont try to use any bricks or stones to support it....
oh, also, i wouldnt try it with steel ramps, but with some rino ramps you can place the jack on the large flat part of the ramp, and jack from there.

Changed my oil today and man do I hate that. I grabed a sure grip filter this time so maybe I wont need to do the jam a screw driver into the filter trick.
I picked up some hi temp rtv and a gasket with the oil and gonna go ahead and make my own fill plug in the cover tomorrow.
[ cause I can.] Gonna hafta coat it nice and make it trick. Most likley day glow green to match the drive shaft and tranny.

I got my Gear oil changed and you guys weren't kidding when you said they gear oil was nasty.. My gears still look brand new... Now I have another question. I don't think they are the original gears. The ring gear has 41 teeth and the worm gear has 12 teeth.. What ratio is that.. I was told you could figure it out just by knowing how many teeth is has...

im not sure if its right since i never did it that way before, but i think you can just divide 41 by 12... and you get 3.416 that sounds about right..... since the 12 toothed gear would have to go around 3.416 times to turn the 41 tooth gear once....
so you have 3.42s
so you have 3.42s

So could I keep the 41 tooth ring gear and get a 11 tooth pinion gear and then I would have 3.73 gears, would that work? I think it would work and be ALOT cheaper to do that... Like I said before, my gears look like they where just installed there so new looking.
