v6 engine light & distributor
Pal of mine was down for a visit today so we got looking about the v6 that's in his 84 firebird. Checked the timing, reading 9 deg. but had real difficulty locating the hold down clamp & bolt for moving the distributor. Can anyone point me in the right direction here ? Very crammed compared to the v8.
Diagnostics. I had assumed there would be a engine light for diagnostics codes on the v6, when we removed the dash bezzle to check the bulb, we found no bulb holder or wire at all. Is there a check engine light for v6 models in 1984 ? And if so where ?
Thanks folks.

As you look at the firewall, the dist clamp/bolt should be a little towards the passenger fender, but not much. I use a 15mm socket on a universal joint (swivel), and a 7" extension, and a ratchet.
There might not be any service engine soon light if the car wasn't made in the USA. I think some Canadian models don't have an SES light -or- a computer. Do you know if there's a computer in the car?

84 is carbed IIRC
Their is very little to no ecm system, and may not have a SES light.
Being an older like that, the dist hold down may be a 5/8 or 9/16. But it is to the pass side of the car about 1", and back about 1/2 to 3/4. The end of the clamp actually touches the trans bellhousing.

Well an 84 out of Cali would definately have an ECM... but I'm 99.9% sure it should also have a service engine soon light. How else would it throw a code? That CCC E2SE carb had stuff on it like a tps and electric choke and mixture solenoid... not to mention if it's an automatic, it'll have the 700r4 trans, which needs that signal from the ECM to activate the TCC.
I'm not sure if the distributor is in any way tied into the computer, though. I never thought to look when I was stripping that '84 to put it's frame onto my '86... I had bigger things to worry about.

Easy way to tell if the dsitributor is hooked up to some kind of electronic controls...does it have a vacuum advance on the side of it or not?
