Something odd with fuel pump....

Today while cleaning my car, after I moved it onto the driveway and turned it off, I heard my fuel pump continue to run (same sound as when you turn key to on postion). I started the car up again and it fired right away. Turned it off again and heard pump go again. I've listened for this sound before but I don't think it does this all the time. I will be sure to listen for it next time I drive the car and turn it off. Is the pump supposed to continue running after shutting car off? Could my hard start problem be the result of the pump not continuing to run after the car is turned off?

so, is it supposed to run after turning car off or not? What controls the pump after the car is shut off?

it will run for a few seconds after you shut the car off. If you go out an hour later and its still running, you got problems.

It continues to run for a bout 4 seconds then shuts off. Problem is that the pump does not do this every time I shut off car.

Is your Oil Pressure Sender in tact? When mine died, it did this to my fuel pump.

Mine does it too once in a while. Hopefully it's not bad.

My camaro does it too. If it helps any... I am almost positive the pump turns off consistently at an oil pressure when the car is turned off. Might be coincidence, but maybe the pump turns off when you have less than a certain amount of oil pressure. Thought that was what the fuel pump relay was for... but I dont know. Somewhere around 10psi I think it says when the fuel pump shuts off... thinking off the top of my head.

Mechanical oil pressure gauge. My fuel pump and fuel pump relay are both ~7000 miles old....

Mine doesn't do it when you flip the key on though.... never has. No trouble starting it either. *shrug*
