Battery charge low, dead cell, loose battery terminals, damaged cables, loose connection at starter, starter solenoid worn... take your pick.

well its mostly random... no particular time... i think it has more trouble when it first starts up...like after sitting...and cold i live in arizona so no such thing. also when i turn my key to ignition. my battery gauge says its at 9, im wondering if thats low and it should be at like 13 or so

How old's the battery? If it's nearing the 5 year mark, time to replace it. Does the voltage shoot up to past 13 when the car finally starts? If so, the battery's done.
Buy an Interstate battery or Sears Diehard battery or AC Delco battery. Any other battery is a repackaged one... for instance, Pep Boys "Pro Start" is a repackaged battery made by Exide- and Exide is known for being a cheap battery.

Yeah, the battery in a sitting state should have damn close to 12.0 V, since we operate on a 12v system. Most I've seen have slightly over 12. 9 definitely sounds dead to me.... If you want a test, find a trickle charger/starter, if your buddy has one, etc. Run the cables to the battery and switch it to start (mine is 50 amp), and try to crank it over. If it fires up straight-away, then it's definitely the batt. Places like where I work, Tire Kingdom, also have battery testers. We usually do a battery test for free as part of our "quick check" program...the whole check is free. But you usually have to pay for something first. We don't take kindly to tickets with Rotate, Check Air Pressure, and Quick check with a balance of 0.00.

my car does the same thing and has ever since i've had it, about 2 years. i've changed the starter solenoid, bench tested the starter with no problems, replaced the battery and alt. and it still does it. must be wiring somewhere or ignition switch.
