rotate engine tell piston 1 (right front) is TDC. Remember, its is up 2 times per engine rotation. Only way I know to make sure you get this right first try is pull valve covers and look at rocker orientation.
Drop distrib in so that the rotor button is pointing to about 7'ish oclock (front of car being 6, back of car 12).
Then you will just have to twist the base tell it fires n runs right, then time it with EST dx'd.
Plug wires start at 7'oclock and go 1 thru 6 clockwise.

Other ways I've hear of to find top dedad center are to stick something inside the cylinder through the spark plug hole to feel when it is on the upstroke. Its faster, but also far riskier than the other method. Just becareful that the thing can't lose fragments in the cylinder and doesn't scratch the wall.
I've never really heard of it, but just throwing an idea out. Could you set the balancer notch at the 0 degree mark and assume that that is TDC???

damien. If you set the balancer at 0, you either get 4tdc, or 1tdc.
Even sticking something in the sp hole, your taking 50/50 chance.

getting it to tdc is no big deal, my major concern was the order of the wires, and the position of the dist...... since this is my first time working on a v-configured motor....
my previous cars were hondas I-4's, and i had an Rx-7 rotary turbo(very fast for minmal mods)

TDC
I guess dj already knows this, but an easy way to find TDC is to put your finger over the #1 spark plug hole and turn the engine with a wrench in the other hand. Compression stroke will pressurize the cylinder and blow against your finger. As soon as the pressure lets up, you have reached TDC.

And it doesn't matter which way your wires come off the distributor cap. As long as you picked a terminal to be for your #1 plug wire, just lay the rest of the wires out clockwise, in 1-2-3-4-5-6 order. I can set up two identical 2.8 f-bodies with their #1 plug wires in different positions, and both will run fine. For a long explanation, read the last message in this post: https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...threadid=60772
Oops, almost forgot- The motor won't start at 0 degrees advanced. Once you have your dist installed, and the rotor points at the #1 terminal (that you chose) on the dist cap, loosen the hold-down bolt and twist the cap slightly counter-clockwise. Only go a little bit, just enough to put the rotor slightly "after" the #1 cap terminal. This throws a bit of advance into the timing, and helps the motor to start. Then you can fine-tune your timing with a timing light.

I would just make it so the rotor is pointing at the firewall mark it on the firewall and on the rotor just so you dont forget. When you drop it back in make sure the marks line up and you are good to go. Just check the timing and adjust as needed.
You guys all over complicate this..pull the #1 plug, stick your finger over the hole and have some one bump the starter. When the timing mark gets close to zero AND your finger gets pushed out your there.

The alternator bracket is in the way. I think just by having the DIST pointd at the firewall would be easy all he has to do is drop it back in and make sure the rotor is pointed were he marked on the firewall.

fast rs, that would assume he marked it before he pulled it out.
He said in his first post, he didnt mark it before he pulled it out.

With a socket and an extension. and putting the wire on tight is a pain. The rest are easy.

I had issues w/the oil pump shaft not droping in right. Stupid thing would either get cocked sideways or just fall out.
