Disk break posi rear end, how much?
At my junk yard back home I was calling them for some V6 engine mounts.
The guy there knows how much I like good camaro parts and told me they have a 10-bolt from a 1991 with disk breaks and factory posi. I didn't ask the ratio.
They want $700 for it. They say it is woth up to $900.
Is it worth it?
They don't have the hole car it came off, they bought it at an auction as the 1 peice.
They normaly sell stuff real cheap.
I just want the disk breaks but they would not part with them.
I know it is old. I bet it is the orignal factory posi so it is most likely most of the way worn out, but I have an Eaton posi (for the Z28)and a Zexel-torsen LSD(for the V6) siting around back home.

Its a 91 so its either a 3.23 or 3.42, more than likely the 3.23, not exactly hard to find, reasonably its worth $300-$400, aluminum pbr brakes being the main reason, an earlier one expect to pay 200-300 with the iron brakes, even a 3.27 pbr brake 9 bolt is reasonably only worth about $300-400 just the same as the 10 bolt, a 3.42 10 bolt or 3.45 9 bolt, still not over 500, tell them to pass the crack pipe unless its a dana44.

They said $700 and I thought BW 9-bolt for sure. Some one else can have it for that price.
When I go home in a few months and if they still have I'll show up with several hundred $. I think they can be talked down.
I was thinking it could be a mod for the V6. Mainly because the disk breaks. The V6 rear has the 3.42 gears in it that I want and I all ready have 28 spline axels and a zexal-torsen for the V6. Just need to put them in.

Which car came with 3.73/posi/drum? Only drum f-body I heard of with 3.73's was the '85 Camaro HO, 3.73/open/drum, and I believe that was also the one with aluminum drums.
I wouldn't pay $700 for that axle; that's highway robbery. It could be new... a long time ago, Summit sold new rear, complete axles for our cars for $3000- but they stopped selling 'em many many years ago- as in, around 1995 or 1996. But it's probably used.
89-up rear disk brakes are the best to get.
82-88 rear disks need to have the 82-88 recall parts installed. The kit is $60 from gmpartsdirect.com ; I have quite a few messages on the suspension/chassis/brakes forum about this. (Do a search)
9 bolts are strong, but there's a lack of gear ratios for 'em...
To install disk brakes on your drum axle, you'd have to do a few things (again, do a search on the susp/chassis/brakes forum), gotta have the drum axleshafts' hubs turned down to fit inside the rotor, and you'll have to modify the axle tube's brake mounting flange to change it from a rectangle (drums) to a square (disks).
The last 3.73 gearset was offered "from the factory" in '85.
And all of the above info excludes the 4th gen 93-up stuff b/c I don't know anything about those.

I always feal lucky to live where i do when i read stuff like this. You can pull ANY rear around here for 50$ flat fee. Theres a "U-Wrench-IT" that changes out 50 cars every other day, very cheap parts.
700$ for a old rear is nuts.. But i guess that depends on how available they are in that area. Are you getting quoted for a rear in Japan?

That's form my junk yard back home in Maine.
There just arn't that many V8 camaros in maine that people are willing to junk. My junk yard is about 5 acres of cars, the guy has been open for 12 years and never had a V8 camaro there he says.
People put them up on blocks rather then junk them for some reason.
Back home there is a 2nd gen that hasn't moved in 5 years.
My V6 hasn't moved in 2 years+.

Suppy & Demand is the case for 3rd Gen cars. After being out of production for 12yrs and attrition taken its toll the Supply of used and junked parts is shrinking. So when a decent used part is available at a increase over previous cost some people complain.
Qutoe "I see those parts cheaper all the time at junk yards in my area ". Well most of us aren't in his or anybodies place where they say it cheaper.
So if a good part is available it up to you if the price is right. It may or not be. but if you want it you will pay. For example: Check out E-Bay (some good / bad) but people are paying.

Anyway; I decided instead to get a motor. I'd seen hundreds of those cars in junkyards- well I went to 3 yards and couldn't find ONE!!! I found two motors but one guy wanted $375 and the other guy wanted $250!! For a 4 cylinder!!! So I junked the car. I bet ya that if I wanted that motor 5 years ago, they would've sold it to me for $50- they were all over the yards. No more!
And think too about the cost involved in the rear disk swap. I got my axle for $150, $50 got me the car's m/c and prop valve and "front to rear" brake line- but when I was all done with it, I spent over $700 to get that under my car. Then the damn posi blew up, and I'm back on a 3.42/open/drum axle- just where I started from. So a "cheap axle" might not wind up being so cheap after all!

We are in "junkyard heaven" here in columbus ohio, they are all over the place. Theres a road in west columbus called "McKinnley" that, no exageration, i would say has 7-8 JY's in a row.
"U-Wrench-It" is a real nice place, they have them all over the country. They put all thier cars up on ramps and the ground is concrete. everything there is a flat fee, i dont care if its a vortec or a "iron duke".
All the 3rd gen camaros you'll find around here are normally stripped down to "nothingness". Its a sad sight when your JY shopping.
This all should explain why JY peices are so cheap around here. If its like you say it is in Maine i would probably look else-where, like E-bay or the classifieds on this website or local car trader mags.
